In an attempt to make up for my somewhat hasty VF3-related post the other day (which created all kinds of confusion when I tried to change the post after discovering that the news was in fact false), check out these videos: http://www.stage6.com/videos/search:saturn+vs+psx The Wipeout ones show that Psygnosis was a better PS developer than it was a Saturn developer, but considering how much easier the PS was to develop than the Saturn it may be surprising to some to see how much arse Saturn Duke Nukem 3D kicks when compared to its inferior PS counterpart. Nice to see what the Saturn could do when programmed by talented people.
it's apples to oranges really. different approaches all together and depending on the tools used and the quality of the tools etc. in theory at least, some games are bound to be better performers on the saturn due to design, and others (most) on the PSX, especially considering modern coding and 3d techniques.
I also agree that the work of Lobotomy Software with "Duke Nukem 3D" on Saturn was great. I was expeciting to watch another "sad" Saturn version, but I got a nice surprise. It was one of the games which made me love my Saturn even more.
Actually it shows that Psygnosis could write really well for the PSone hardware and that Tantalus could port the PS code over to the Saturn but couldn't quite match the performance of the original platform. The Saturn port wasn't done in-house. -hl718
I am getting sick and tired of seeing that shitty broserplug missing message popping up all the time. Since the divx webplayer fucking sucks. Why can´t they use something that works, and not eat up your ram ?!
I agree that the divx net player sucks. Runs far too slow as well. Flash is a far better way to go with cleaner video as well  That's why I use it on my site. Back on topic, yeah most of the games shown there were made with the PSX in mind apart from Exhumed (Power Slave) and Duke. So of course those two looked better on the Saturn. In the right hands the Saturn can produce very high quality visuals. Take a look at Sonic R or even D-Xhird. That game features full 3D arenas, full light sourcing, polygon transparencies, shading and detailed texture mapping all running in a resolution higher than any PlayStation game at 60fps ! The problem is that the game is a bit shit  I have a video of it on my site but for all those who are too lazy to go through the pages, here's a direct link - http://www.segagagadomain.com/movie-pages/dxhird.htm Yakumo
*Prepares for death* I like the DivX web player. It looks a billion times better than YouTube, it's widescreen and you can download videos too. Runs fine on my system. Anyways, without actually playing the games, a comparison vid doesn't do too much for me. I wanna know how the game feels and handles, not just the different numbers of polygons.
Yeah, I tried Symphony of the Night on the Saturn the other day. Game did have some lag and longer load times, but the animation was far more fluid and nice in some areas. Quick question: Does the Saturn version of Resident Evil run better then the Playstation version? I heard that it is both better and worse in some areas.
Saturn Bio Hazard's 3D polygon models look much worse than the PSX ones but it does load quicker and has cleaner backgrounds in most areas. The intro is also uncut just like the PSX Director Cut edition. Yakumo
There are lots of games that be compared, but in the end, it's doesn't make sense. It depends on how it was coded first, who ported, if it was a rush job,...
Well said, Johnny. We allknow that the Saturn could have done a better Symphony of the Night if it wasn't a port by the half arsed Konami Nagoiya office. We also know that the PSX version of Darius Gaiden could be better than it is but thanks to Interbec or Bec (all of their games are shite) as they later became known, it's a bloody God awful mess while the Saturn version by Taito themselves is arcade perfect. I *love* this game's eurobeat/hi-nrg style soundtrack. And you're right, the graphics are very good. A lot of people compare PSX games late into the console's life to earlier Saturn ones, but in reality a lot of the games on the PSX from the same time period looked worse than the Saturn version. And it all just shows you how lazy and cheap most American game developers+publishers are. The Saturn was too much of a challenge for them.
Getting back on the topic of Wipeout, I thought the Saturn version of 2097 looked quite well but was ruined (for me, having played the PSX version extensively) by running at half the framerate. Normally, I hardly pay attention to what framerate a game runs in, but this really made me notice.
Yep. Let's not forget In the Hunt, running better on the PS1. You also told that Dead or Alive looks better on the Saturn. In the end, what would be a good way to compare, ends up being the worst. That's why i don't like to compare systems, using this. It always end in war.
*buffering* *buffering* Zzz..shame Anyway, I actually was one of the people that didn't really like the Saturn version of Duke Nukem 3D. Mostly because I was spoiled with the PC version and it annoyed me that the quotes were too fast (to fit into the small Saturn sound memory), the crunched textures and the sloppy level design in places (no rotating doors, no subways on the rapid transit level, which ruins the entire map). The secret extra level was also incredibly shitty, a shame. The quake conversion is another matter, I actually like that, same goes for Tantalus's port of Wipeout 2097.
