The drive that doesn't work has yellow ink used on the CD block. The actual working block has white ink. Seems like I have to go for a loose spare Saturn then, it's unlikely that I find another CDblock that works :/
if anyone needs help on repairing a cd board pm me as i know a bit about sega saturn drives as i fix them now and again
Thanks! You just got a PM  My other Saturn (the first one to be making problems) actually had a CD block with yellow ink. I swapped the block and it now seems to work again... hope this'll last for some time. It has to if the error was the old CD pot or somewhere in the block. When I last adjusted the pot, games were read for the following 1-2 months or so, I am quite sure it must have been something with the old CD block. As for my other problem child, here are the pictures that I took for raylyd. No problems with most games, sometimes though it crashes during loading screens (only with certain games).
IIRC they weren't all the 6S, but a lot were. Technically you won't be able to "just" change the laser as it then needs setting up with special equipment, but in practice it should hopefully work
I would agree it's not possible (or at least very difficult/painful) to replace the laser without tools if it was a PC-Engine (of ROM-ROM series) but yes, adjustments on the saturn drive are easy enough to be done "by eye" in an acceptable manner.
Good for you. Like I said, you'll probably find it'll work. However, the CORRECT procedure to maximize lifespan is to follow Sega's instructions and set it up with special gear. I'm not having a go at anyone here, this is just a disclaimer. Do this at your own risk! Personally, I use the service manual to set my Saturns up... I'm probably the only person left doing so, though!!
