Hey guys I accidentally saved over an older excel file with a newer file which had the same name. But...I need the older file back. I didn't realize that they were two different things. I have Norton on my Garbage bin and I tried the Unerase Wizard. It had many versions of the file listed so I chose one earlier in the day. It said that the file had been restored....but I don't see any evidence of the file anywhere? Any help would be appreciated. The file I lost was a spreadsheet of about 50 CDs I'm adding to my online store. I've already put them into inventory and now I have no record of which CDs they are...
You could try running EasyRecovery. When I was having probs with my harddisk, a friend on the forums was able to send me the a copy. After installation, it was able to scan different saved versions of one file (it's a coincidence that it was also an Excel file). It might or might not work for you, but I'd give it a try!
Well if it said file was recovered. It probably put it in some directory. Just go to Search and look for all excel files in your PC with *.xl (or whatever extension excel files are).. Now I know that hwen you delete something in windows, it really doesn't delete it off the HDD (whereas OSX and I think linux do but I may be wrong on Linux). However, I do not know what Windows does when overwriting files. I don't know if it just deletes part of it so that it looks like its erased but it actually isn't OR if windows actually overwrites the file. Overall, just try Recoverymyfiles or EasyRecover but certainly Norton should find it too. Look at the instructions to see if you did it right.
It looks like it's gone. I tried the free download, thanks. I have a way to get most of the data together again a lot easier than I had thought, so I'm just going to do that. Thanks for the responses.
