Scam phone calls, if you get one do you screw with the person on the other end?

They usually tell you they're calling from Windows, or the computer support centre, or anything other than Microsoft.

If you want to find out who it is, "go through" it (you don't even have to actually do it on your PC) and they'll usually do the same thing - take you into Event Manager, get you to see all the nasty red Xs and yellow !s - obviously bad stuff, then tell you to load their webpage. That's all you need - their website.

Yeah, playing with them is fun. I saw my friend string along an Indian caller selling mobile phone service, telling them his business needs 20 phones with roaming Internet... then eventually announcing, "I have to go now, Nursie is coming and I'm not supposed to be using the phone. She's going to make me take my medicine!"

Note that some of them are just plain rude. What they're doing is illegal in the UK, especially if you're TPS registered - but they're almost always calling from abroad and don't care.... and little can be done about it.

 

In a country where answering international calls can cost you a shit load of money (UK) (actually fuck it, anything to do with a phone costs money here - was always jealous of the free local calls in the states) I just hang up if it happens.

Sometimes i just say "yes" over and over again in response to everything.

I never answer those kinds of calls. I usually don't answer any call from a number that isn't in my contacts. If it's something really important, and for some reason I don't have their number, they can always leave me a message or text me. Otherwise, it's none of my concern.

Also, GoH, it's fucked up the way you mentioned that the guy had a "thick accent". As if that somehow makes it worse? Like, you can't trust anyone with an accent? You should choose your words more carefully.

 

What would happen if I told them I was on a mac?

 

I got one of those calls a while back, i would tell them your on windows 3.1

 

Find a soundboard and go nuts.

I forgot to tell, I have learned that these callers value time more than anything else that's why, if you guys notice, these callers talk fast and pushy.

The best way to deal with telemarketers, if you have the time, is to waste their time. If you can drag on for over 15 minutes then end it with something such as "I need to check with apartment manager to see if it's OK to put siding in my apartment", they'd get frustrated and be more likely to not call you.

Also this can hurt the caller. Wasted 15 minutes with no sale = no commission and a risk of not meeting required sale quote.
