This problem that my (v1.01) SCPH-10000 seemed to always have has recently started occurring more frequently... Basically, it can freeze at bootup (During the opening OSD animation) or at the browser. The background sounds still play, but I think that it occasionally wavers and fades in/out. I haven't tested it with any real games, since it's optical drive seems to be showing quite some obvious signs of wear (Takes about 10-20s to detect a Playstation 2 DVD game). It's HDD unit has been wiped too (After an accident with the Sony DRM), and there are no games installed on it. It became really bad after I resetted the console a couple of times when it failed to boot FMCB off the 64MB compatible card it was on. Does anyone here know what is wrong? As far as I know, it hasn't been opened before.... but then again, it never had a warranty sticker. >_> The console seems to be still alive, but I think that it would be best for me to start gathering information in case it really becomes an unavoidable problem. l_Oliveria has suggested that it is a bank of resistors near the GIF that has cracked solder joints. But since nobody seems to have a service manual for this console model, I thought that I should ask for advice from more people first (Especially those who have most certainly solved this issue). Does anyone have diagrams/photographs of the affected area? How different is the board from an early SCPH-30000 series mainboard? I don't have any experience with dismantling this console model, so I don't want to open it and leave it open for too long or I might lose/break something. I already did something horrible by opening the HDD unit when I thought that I had irreversibly locked it, during experiments with the Sony DRM. Apparently, it just required some unlocking with my own tools (The Sony utility disc didn't seem to even detect the locked disk....). If I found that out earlier, I wouldn't have cut open the HDD unit (lol?) to connect the disk to my SCPH-39006 for formatting. Preventing such an incident from happening again is something I would very much like to do.... thanks!
Remove the BB Unit entirely and retest. There is always a possibility that the thick black cable may be failing, both the AV Adaptors and Multitaps are prone to breaking that way and the SCPH-20400 has the same design flaw. Also check near the power supply. On a SCPH-30001 v1 I forgot to re-solder the boards together, the result was an intermittent power issue that behaved the same way. On a very unlikely note, the HDD-OSD on this version seems to store settings separately from the built in rom OSD, l_Oliveria knows more about that than I do. I read that the SCPH-10000 never had a warranty sticker, I have never seen one that had one myself either so that is probably true. Edit, the 1x00x boards have very little in common with the others, the only interchangable part I can think of is the laser.
The first Japanese PlayStation2 console with tampering proof stickers was the SCPH-18000. Also, the first PlayStation was the PSOne.
It wasn't? The small, white PSOne was only released in 2000, over 5 years after the release of the "bulky" SCPH-1000-SCPH-9000 series.
I sad that I meant the PSOne was the first PS1 model that had a seal sticker. The other models do not.
