Yes, I am cursed with a model without the cogs designed to adjust the laser, so, I'm here asking for help. It won't read anything at all, and I have the notorious clicking inside the disc drive when it tries to load anything.

All the solutions I found were for 30001 models, models with cogs, and what I'm hearing is that I should really just throw it away and buy a new one. Can anyone offer me a solution?

basically, afaik, you options are to try and clean the laser, try to adjust the pots under the laser, or get a new laser.
5000x is better than 3000x imo, its quieter and has builtin IR eye (so can be turned on/off with remote).

90% of PS2 Lasers can be fixed. You need a small torx bit to separate the objective lens assembly (the one with the focusing coils) from the base, then clean the large round lens below.

First thing to do (before wasting time trying to adjust) is remove the black plastic cap and inspect the tracking/focusing coils.

If they're burnt you will need to replace them and the LA6507 chip.

With a ohm meter (disconnect the flat cable which goes to the PS2 first) the four pins that go to the coil should be measured. A good coil measures something around 4 to 5 ohms. A bad one measures 3 ohm or less.
