Is there a size limit to what a PC can read when it comes to SD cards? I have a 2gig Panasonic Micro SD that works fine in my Lumix Digicam and my Sharp phone but my PC won't read it. I'm using a USB card reader which works fine with my 1gig Micro SD cards. Does anyone have any idea why the PC can't read the 2gig one? Yakumo
what computer is it? if it's ANCIENT it might not read the filesystem on the sd card... from what i know pcs have no limitations of sorts. this sd card behaves the same on differebnt pcs?
The motherboard is about 6 years old I guess but the thing is that the file system should be the same as the 1gig card since both were formatted in the digital camera yet the PC can only read the 1gig card. Yakumo
mmmh weird... i remember that some micro sd cards worked at different voltages (and were incompatible with certain cellphones), but i can't tell why your pc doesn't read it.
When you say not read it do you mean that it is not being detected or that it won't attempt to read it? If the former then try a different card reader, some older card readers (especially ones that read many different types) are pretty poor when it comes to compatability with newer cards. someone at work had the same problem and a new card reader solved it. if the latter then try formatting the card on the PC using the FAT filesystem.
Actually 2GB SDHC cards are being sold, and like all SDHC cards they have some compatibility troubles with SD card readers, maybe that's your trouble. In that case, the only solutions are getting a standard SD card (in this case you'll be limited to 2GB), or getting a SDHC-compatible card reader.
THanks for the info guys. the card is a standard Panasonic 2GB Micro SD with converter (same type as the 1GB I have) It's transfer rate is 5MB/S. When I put it in to the PC (XP Pro Edition) it scans the card for files so it knows it's in the reader plus the reader's lights are flashing as the card is being read. Although the PC scans the card it doesn't offer the standard list of options on how to use the card (open folder, play in media player, show image etc...) and when you try to open it manually it says "Insert in to drive". The same goes for when I try to format it. At first I thought it was a dodgy card so I got it replaced this afternoon but the same problems came up. What I'll do is try to transfer data from my camera to the PC via the USB. This should work since the camera seems to have no trouble what so ever in reading and saving to the card just like my 2 year old phone. If the PC still won't read from the card when the camera is the "reader" then I guess it's a PC issue :sob: Yakumo
I ve had computers giving me shit with SD cards. It didn't even allow formatting etc. Turned out to be the fault of the 2 readers I had but worked fine with a new reader. Both cards were simple 2GB SDs, not sure if they are SDHC though
That sounds like the problem I'm having. I'll let you know how it goes with the camera being used as the reader tomorrow. I'm too drunk now to bother  Yakumo
Make sure that your drivers for the reader are up to date. My Asus G1S laptop only supported regular SD cards until I found a compatible driver for SDHC cards. The same driver incompatibility could exist either with your card or the micro converter that you are using (if you can, swap out the converter to test).
This happened to me if I put microSD cart in the adapter not properly or the card have dirty contacts, but mostly it's when I put the card not properly in the reduction. Try to clear the contacts or change the reduction.
Using the camera as a reader should do just fine, I had the same problem recently with a 2GB Micro SDHC which my laptop's SD card reader couldn't read well and using my Panasonic Lumix as reader worked perfectly well.
Well, it did work in the end thanks to the Panasonic Lumix being the reader. It turns out that my SD card reader is incompatable. Time to buy a new one I think since I don't want to be taking the camera out everytime I want to write to my card. Thanks for the help guys! Yakumo
