Has anybody used one of these? I'm looking to do an/(a long overdue) upgrade of my SE P900. I highly want the Xperia because of the keyboard, type of touch screen, ease of coding and dislike for simple phones. I do not want a iPhone due to my dislike of using the iPod Touch & use of virtual keys. My only concerns with buying one now is that, I won't be upgrading my phone again for a good 3-5 years and the X2 & X10 are right around the corner. While the X10 is an android and lacks a keyboard, sony recently showed off a model that does have a keyboard. The X2 will have a slightly improved keyboard and will come with winmob 6.5.2 vs 6.1 on the X1. But the problem is that there is no clue for when X2 will actually be available in canada and I worry the initial cost will maybe be too high (even though sony says they want it to launch for the same or less then the X1 but currently I can get an X1 for $475). Any opinions (other then buying an iphone)?
I had one for a while - I would recommend it. I would recommend the X2 if you can afford it though as it may have got rid of some of the niggles I found on the Xperia X1. Click below and have a look in the album
I would love an X2 but I worry I might be waiting an extra 3-6 months just to get one (it's barely come out yet). My P900 is kind of on it's death bed (battery barely holds a charge anymore, case is pretty badly messed up), but it is about 6ish years old =P. Why did you ditch your X1? I know there is the X1a that has some fixes from the european X1 but still not perfect. I know X2 is supost to fix most of it (along with the update to winmob 6.5.3). =/ Oh for game ideas, I'm thinking to do a cross between doom rpg/wolf rpg/orcs & elves meets zork! IE 3d dungeons but you play it like zork by typing (move, attack, etc). =)
I did like the xperia, quite a lot in fact. Windows mobile just wasn't for me - nor was the resistive touch screen. If you're used to a PDA type screen then this phone might be for you. The keyboard was excellent and if I could buy it cheap enough I would probably have kept it.
ah ok. I actually like resistive touch. I don't like the touch screen on the iphone (but that might be due to the OS). I like stylus and feel I get less selection errors with resistive touch screens.
Nokia N900 kicks the pants out of X1. I was considering to buy the X1 because I owned the P800 and later on the P990, but my choice came down to the Nokia. It's open and much much faster than the sluggish X1. Kinda big though. The X2 is right around the corner btw, and for the iPhone/SE experience look to the X10. That said, all of these phones have mediocre previews/reviews.
I think the Nexus one looks pretty good on paper. No idea how it handles though - or any Android phone for that matter.
Yeah I've been reading about all the issues with the X1 over the past few weeks. I think i'm more concerned about the cable issue that can render the keyboard worthless. Yet it seems that's a non issue now. I would like the X2 but i'm worried it's going to be another 6-8 months before it's even available in canada. My P900 isn't going to hold up for much longer. =) The only major reasons why I would want the X2 over X1 is the updated winmob 6.5 but there are unofficial rom flashes to update the X1 to 6.5. I'm not sure why I feel so interested in wanting to dev on the X1/X2 when there are many other options. I guess maybe the need to justify getting a high end phone again over a simple phone. Yet I don't want to lock my self into a 3 year contract over a cheap phone either (i'm currently not locked into a contract anymore, so i'm free to leave but stay due to rogers2rogers which lets me call my wife with out using my mins, which makes up 80% of my calling). -edit- The X10 will be hitting canada soon but my main issue with it is the lack of a keyboard. =( I DESPISE touch screen keyboards!!!!!
With the advent of Winmo7 all the work you do in the next months on a 6.5 system will be lost. Google Winmo7 and you'll see what I m on about. As I said, if you want a linux computer (which can run win95 emulated!) in your pocket with a resistive yet awesome touchscreen (amazing how it responds to fingers as well as it does.kicks the shit out of my older phones) and a hardware keyboard, take a look at maemo/nokia n900. It's debian based.
Yeah i've seen the Winmo7 stuff. I'm not a fan atm. It's also going to be a good 1-2 years before a good phone with it is available to buy here. Not to mention it does away with what I like in the xperia in the first place. =/ n900 looks nice but nobody carries it in canada. =( Also if you check out xda forums, people have ported some really interesting things to the X1.
I've thought about the droid and it is pretty damn nice actually. I might pick one up when prices drop off
Why dont you try and pick up a cheap unlocked android phone on ebay. Something like a htc g1 or one of the later models. Unless you can get a Droid they are meant to be pretty nice. You are better off developing for an OS thats going to be around for allot longer and you might even possibly get to make some money from it.
Actually for legality purpose. I'm not sure really if I am allowed to make stuff to sell. So with it kind of being obscure, my stuff will be easier to get work to accept plus it will probably make it shine for that area since there isn't much else (yeah there are winmo games but not many and most are not made for a specific device). I know I sound bias/blind fanboyism but I really like my P900 and my wife's new W705 is a nice little phone. A coworker has an HTC dream and while alright, the phone seems kind of meh. I think I would be open to the xperia X10 more if not for the lack of a keyboard (that runs on android).
I've been using android for about half a year now(HTC Hero) and I am quite impressed. It's so versatile and customizable, but even without changing much it just works great.
You should look at the HTC Touch Pro 2. The Xperia is OEMed by HTC anyway, Sony just puts its branding on it. The Touch Pro 2 is widely available and has more units out in the field than the X1. And I can't think of a hardware feature that the X1 has that the Touch Pro 2 doesn't. -hl718
Look at what I got in the mail today!! =) So far, I love it and it's pretty damn awesome. I'm still fumbling around with it a bit (been a while since I used WinMo, last time was 8 years back on a pocketpc). I think my biggest grip so far with the unit is it is a bit laggy when navigating around but once you get use to it, you tend to not accidentally launch the wrong app. Also the current xperia panel i'm using right now runs pretty fast. I did make sure to install opera on this thing quickly (ie sucks). Also the future outlook is not too bad as SE has publicly anounced ETA on the roll out of the WinMo 6.5.2 & 6.5.3 Updates which are suppost to fix some of the lag. Also, I  the keypad!
Congrats. Couple more photos but with the keypad out too? And of the panels? Nice looking phone this, good spec too I just ordered my new phone...
