Kind of an old subject but has EA more or less done away with it and given us options to remove it if its there? What games do I need to watch out for? I need to know since I'm getting Crysis
No, its still there. Crysis has a fairly bening version, but Crysis Warhead and the Crysis GOTY pack both have the intrusive version. You can get rid of it, thought its not as easy as it should be.
So I should just get Crysis not warheard (which I am aware is a seperate game) or the Game of the year version? Step one was confirming I could run it which I have I ran the demo no problem now I need to make sure I don't have DRM bogging things down.
I think bioshock was the biggest offender for pc game drm and Spore. I think they've scaled back the restrictions after the large amount of bad press.
I think they were talking about the 'next Crysis' which Crytek wants to release on all platforms. Also you might think about simply setting up another partition with another OS, only used for gaming... then you wouldn't have to worry about Securom or whatnot.
and should I wait for windows 7 before getting it? in the event the game gets all assholish on me and refuses to run after I have windows 7 from Vista?
If you ask for opinions, I don't care much about Securom, Games For Windows Live, Rockstar Games Social Club and all the other stuff publishers deliver with their games these days... it's not like you could do much about it anyway. If you're paranoid about malicious software being installed with games just read reviews before installing. Also, game compatibility is a non-issue in 7, and definitely the same as in Vista... what works there works in 7 too. Only difference might be between x64/x86 versions, but that's pretty much it. Crysis runs fine, Warhead too. I've been playing many 'old' Y2K games recently in 7 RC-1 x64 with no issues in any, except for Max Payne which requires a sound patch which is available in the Remedy & Max Payne forums. And then there's still the virtualized XP mode (license included in 7 pro +), I can't say much about it performance wise but it works great for anything that just won't run on 7 (or x64). Taucias, imho those 'modern protection schemes' are less of an issue with cracked versions today than with legitimate copies. Isn't that why some devs/publishers have switched back to no/less invasive protection mechanisms?
