Seeking Jedi Master in the art of Famicom convertors

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by Greatsaintlouis, Mar 16, 2004.

  1. Alright, so I went to the local gamestore today and selected a Gyromite NES cartridge that felt right. I'm looking for the elusive Famicom-to-NES adaptor that was bundled in some early NES cartridges. I bought the cartridge, took it home, undid the screws, and found nothing but the normal NES Gyromite PCB.

    Again.

So, could anyone tell me the trick to getting this right? Are there special markings or ANYTHING of the sort on a case that could be a giveaway? Also, what carts are known to carry adaptors? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

And yes, I know they can be bought easily on eBay, but that takes all the fun out of looking for one, right?

That will spoil all the fun! :smt019

Not that I know which carts to look for, but surely you would enjoy it more gussing the weight and finding the prize inside! :smt043

Buy 5 Gyromites and you're bound to get one, it took me 2 Gyromites and an Excitebike. There are 3 or 4 games that can include them, the best chance you'll have is in Gyromite, also Gyromite sucks so it should cost no more than a dollar.

If Gyromite was an ROB game...why the hell is it so common?

  5. I.E. which game titles were known to carry the adaptor. I'm not up for just buying random games and hoping there could be an adaptor in one - if I did it that way, I might as well get one from eBay!

Kyuusaku, you said that there are 3 or 4 games that include the adaptors. I know Gyromite was one, and apparently Excitebike as well. Do you offhand know the other ones?

Blur: I have no idea. There was a pawn shop that used to have 2 ROBS here that weren't for sale, and when I went in a week ago they were both sold. :smt011

    Rob the useless robot

Gyromite is so common becasue until about 86 it was the pack in game until SMB1 took over. At that time Nintendo discontinued support for the robot, which was the plan in the first place. The only reason ROB was ever made was to make the NES look like a toy and not a Game system, as most retailers in 84 were still scared of game systems becasue of the crash.

I've got a ROB if you want to trade something for it, it's incomplete and has a crack in the eyes, I could post some pics if you're interested.

    Hmm..

Unless you were offering it really cheap, I'd have to say no...(i imagine shipping would kill me!) I somehow think that ROB is the sort of thing that you just have to get lucky with.

I think maybe Ice Climbers, really not sure on the others sorry. Just go with Gyromite.

  9. Yeah, ROB, while it looks interesting, was one of those one-shot peripherial type thingies. I know there were only something like 2 games made for it, and the only one I can think of is gyromite. A neat find if you get it for cheap, but not really worth it otherwise.

I guess I'll keep looking for a Gyromite then. The reason I asked was that there are quite a few copies of 10 Yard Fight at the local game exchange place, and they look to be first-gen NES games, and I think they are only a dollar vs. Gyromite's $3.

So anyone want to buy two nice Gyromite boards? One still has the grey outer case, and I could prolly find the other one for you if you really wanted it... :smt040

    man you guys.

1.) Squeeze 1/3 from the bottom.

    Firm? Then TAP. Sounds solid?

2.) Tap a cart that is known NOT to have the converter.
    Hollow sounding.

Hard solid thump? Inflexible? Try to bend it! A cart with no converter will flex. One with a converter will be a solid piece.

Do the PAL early release carts also have the convertors? I want to get one...but I can't seem to find them on Ebay (I can only find the NES to famicom, not famicom to NES...but then again I'm probably just being a spaz ^_^) Thanks in advance.

Famicom to NES are always housed in a bigass pull cartridge, they're all over eBay. Assem, its not that easy, without a scale you will not be able to tell the difference seriously, they weigh nearly the same amount, and how easy is it to bend a NES cart? The conversion cart has a "glop-top" epoxy chip and light as hell board while the real other one has mask ROMs and a larger board heavier board. If you are a big FC collector get a Famicom they're cooler anyways.
