I apologize for being so vague, but here it goes: Photos surfaced years ago of a very ugly SEGA console shell mockup / prototype / possible fake. It was post-Saturn, using analog (NiGHTS) pads with strange modifications (a VMU hole?). The console was very ugly, like a cross between a PC Engine Shuttle, Atari Jaguar & US SNES, with atrocious details. I vaguely remember a large round area and maybe a huge embossed SEGA logo. I believe the photo(s) appeared in a print magazine, around 1999 - early 2000's, most likely EGM or GameFan, but it could have been online. I find it strange that I've never seen it online since then, after exhaustively searching. The photo(s) do not appear in the usual locations with all the other console prototypes you see online. It looked so bad that it screamed "fake", but it could have been a real mockup quickly thrown together for some purpose. If it was real, it was definitely a leak, unlike the other "nice"-looking Dreamcast mockups they showed off. Anyone remember this, or have the pic(s)? Thanks for reading. BTW, I found this old thread, but the photos are now lost: http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65 Could that have been it?
Thanks, Segafreak_NL, that's it. It looks like GameFan's source of the pics was China? Can anyone shed any light on that beast?
GameFan and EGM likely gleaned information and rumours from HK and/or Taiwanese video game mags in addition to the Japanese ones.
