SEGA 32X & SEGA-CD hardware add on system prices

Why do 32X add on systems cost so much. Most of the auctions that I looked like $80 (US) TO $500 (US). I thought this system was junk? If it's junk is it going for high prices are they rare??? i also noticed the games (US) games are little high in my opinion. (How many 32X games are out there?) Are 3X games rare or something? Some people are asking high with box and in good shape, start around $35-$80.

This also goes for SEGA-CD add on machine. There in the $100s for a complete system, sure you can find a deal every one and while like $40 (US) for a geny and 32X games togther for starting price $50-up.

32X systems were primarily used with model 2. That common setup is cheap.

People tended to toss away the box and model 1 adapter

 

[SUP][/SUP]According to Wiki 34 games were released on the Sega 32X, as well as six Mega-CD 32X games. The console wasnt that popular and not many had been sold so yeah its pretty rare not as rare as some other consoles though. Some of the games are relatively easy to find like Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter and go for about 20 dollars then you have rarities such as T-MEK, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000, Kolibri and Knuckles Chaotix that fetch about $100+ cart only and even more boxed with manual.

 

For some reason the American arm supported it better. Little as that can be said about anything 32X. We had more titles and higher print runs than PAL.

 

Wasn't it because Sega Japan was working on the Saturn and the 32x was all to do with Sega America trying to boost the sales of the Genesis?

 

Yes, Sega of America came up with the idea for the 32X and Sega of Japan went along with it but they were focused on the Saturn and did not properly support the 32X. And as such the 32X suffered and failed. Had they thrown more resources behind it, it might have done better.

The 32X is usually cheap to buy. I got one in the original box with Knuckles Chaotix awhile back for 20$. I didn't even want the 32X, just the game. It's possible the prices have gone up due to stupidity. Bear in mind though that if you want a Complete in Good or Excellent condition for the 32X or Sega CD, it won't ever be cheap. But for decent condition or without the box, the Sega Cd and 32X should be pretty cheap.

Oh I have a similar story for the Sega CD. I wanted to get a Sega CD and I was able to get one for around 30$ WITH a Sega Genesis Model 1. Later I wanted a Genesis Model 2, and I ended up spending around the same, maybe 35$, for a Model 2 Genesis that came with a Model 2 Sega CD, in the Genesis Model 2 box. Just remember don't judge prices based on Buy It Now prices. Actual auctions usually close for lower.

 

I got a 32X for $10 and $12 here in USA. I also got Knuckles Chaotix for like $25. None of this was in box but rather in good condition and they work.

To the point there's little purpose importing Japan 32x. They're both NTSC so it's like SNES and N64 to a greater degree.

Cheaper USA 32x fits most Japanese systems and games. Literally all you're getting is wider slot opening with the JPN 32x unit.

 

I do know for fact that the 32X wasn't language limited like the Genesis was. They were just limited by the video mode. USA and JAP 32X were the same minus the wider slot for JAP Megadrive systems. PAL 32X can be modified to NTSC region with a single wire and same for NTSC to PAL. Don't know the details right now.

 

The 16-bit era is popular amongst the younger crowd right now. Being the 32x is "obscure" it doesn't surprise me prices are on the rise.

If you look around long enough it isn't too hard to find a 32x for $10-15 but the problem is that many are lacking cables. I can build the cables necessary for connecting the Genesis to the 32x (both models) so it isn't a problem for me. If anyone wants to commission one feel free to PM me - don't have the parts on hand but it'd be trivial to put one together.

SegaCDs, on the other hand, have always been a bit pricy in my mind. SonicCD is a game clearly worth playing as are both Lunars and a handful of other titles. Fixing a broken one is a cheap way to get one but shipping almost always kills the deal.

 

Oh I'm not looking at the 'Buy it now' auctions, I've been following some auctions to see how high they go. 32X's with no cables are dirt cheep, it's the one that includes the cables and even more if it still has it's box. It went for $75 (US), another one without the box went for $50.

As for SEGA-CDs they are for really insane high prices. A working Model 1 with all cables can get around say $70-$90, but most cases you are also getting a Genesis with it, may it be model 1 or model 2. I think it's strange seeing a model 2 Genesis on a model 1 SEGA-CD.

Games for the SEGA-CD has been cheep depending what it is and does it come with the box. Also it seems to matter what time and day the auction stops at how high the price gets. There are four games I would like to have, Popful Mail (is this an RPG? A auction going on right now for that game is $150), Lunar 1 and Lunar 2 (Usually around $50) and Mad Dog Mcgee (normally around $100+. why?).

Strange. My unboxed 32X had the cables and is in working condition for $12.

You can get 3rd party cables for pretty cheap on eBay. I've seen people asking a lot for 32X systems, but I don't think they're actually worth that much. The games aren't worth that much, either - the American ones at least. Knuckles Chaotix is probably the most sought-after American release, and I've seen those go for as low as $30. Most of the games I own were around $5-7. I imagine the 32X CD games are worth a bit more, though I've never really looked. The only really rare 32X release that I'm aware of is Darxide. I've heard that one can go for quite a bit of money; it was a PAL-only release.

 

Even in Japan the 32X cost quite a lot of money. You won't find a good one for under 7000 yen. Games range from 900 you for the common stuff to 5000 yen for Virtua Fighter and even more for the rare games. I want a Mark 1 Mega CD butthey alway sgo for a high price

 

I got a model 1 Sega CD a few months ago for $15. I don't think the guy selling it to me even knew what it was. It had a game inside, which the seller didn't mention. It works just fine and it's in pretty good condition.

That sucks that Virtua Fighter is 5000 yen, although I'm sure it had better cover art than the US version. I believe the one I bought was $7.

I had a 32X when I was a kid, and my mom convinced me to give it to my cousin, who never gave it back. Recently I've been buying up all the games I used to have. The ones I'm still missing are Knuckles Chaotix (which I originally found at a garage sale) and the Star Trek game, whatever it was called.

EDIT: The game I was thinking of was Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. I liked it for the pool game, and I never bothered with anything else.

 

Most of the Japanese 32X covers are pretty cool. The Virtua Fighter one is indeed nice as is the Virtual Racing cover. Actuall, here is the Japanese "Super" 32X cover to Virtua Fighter. The US cover apart from the ugly general design of the 32X packing ised the Japanese Saturn cover art from what I remember.

US Virtua Fighter was a pack-in with some 32X units. Cartridges are worthless here.

Boxes don't help value much either, because they're terrible. Flimsy crap.
