So i have a front loading Sega CD but recently i have been having some problems with the cd tray. When there is no game in the console it closes just fine, but when i put a game in it closes and then opens back up again. If i keep shutting it again eventually it closes and stays closed and i can play. But recently i got a bunch of Sega CD games and testing them all was a nightmare since it look like 10 minutes just to get the cd tray to stay closed each time. Anybody know what could be causing this or how to fix it? I Have heard the belts in the front loaders tend to get loose but wouldn't that effect it even if there was no game in it?

Omp posted an excellent solution for that problem at SEGA-16 forum, which involves cleaning the open/close detection sensor switches and filling a broken groove on the spiral screw which lifts the mechanism when closing the tray.

Great reading. I suggest you go through the whole thread when you have some free time. Lots of useful hints for mechanical repairs there.

My model 1 Sega CD used to have the exact problem yours is having. Replacing the drive belt fixed it for me.

What's funny is my model 1 CD seems to have a loose belt too but it still works perfectly. Probably because the belt seems to be quite sticky and grips the pulleys well. Only did this to me twice.
