So my Sega CD (model 2) won't read discs at all. Half the time it stays on the "Please Wait" part of the BIOS screen, the other half it goes to the CD player with NO DISC on the screen. I'm thinking I need to replace the laser, but how do I know which one I need to get?
There are 3 choices of laser for sega cd 2. Sony kss-210, samsung soh-t4n or jvc optima 6. What model is your sega cd 2? Flip it over. Mk-4102 is Sony or samsung. Mk-4102a is jvc optima 6. You can also tell by popping open the cd lid and looking at the spindle. Silver is sony or samsung all black is jvc. Note allthough the sony laser and samsung look identical (or close to) they are not interchangeable due to slightly different components. Your best bet is to pull the unit apart to id the laser. There is a guide on sega-16 titled sega-cd repair or thereabouts.
Well then what else could it be? I've cleaned it pretty well, and nothing appears to be out of place.
I think ape was offering you the laser? Alternatively ebay is full of them and they are the same laser as some sega saturns.
If replacing the laser doesn't work, it will be bad capacitors. In fact the only fault you could have on the laser which would cause it to be unable to read the discs is lens damage. Bad Capacitors will have a effect similar to that of a bad optical pickup. Poor power supply (from the said bad capacitors) will cause the circuit to be too unstable to allow for disc read.
True that, i replaced all the caps in my mk4102a recently. Allthough it was a working unit with new laser.
Here is the full cap list for the MK4102A Sega CD2 with JVC Optima 6. Made this list when I replaced all the caps in mine (note that thread has cap lists for both model 1 CD's Sony and JVC drive and all 3 model 2 CD's Sony, Samsung and JVC drive). http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showth...-repair-thread&p=549930&viewfull=1#post549930 There are the Sega service manuals you can download from here but unfortunately, no JVC drive model (since it was the last of the Sega CD2's). *edit, I will mention the MK4102A board was "fun" to do as it has a lot of surface mount components on the underside of the board which are close to the legs of the caps. You can however, tell where the legs of the caps are as they are marked on the underside of the board by a L shape. it should look like this L . cap . 7 (pretend the 7 is an upside down L.....lol!) It was a bit easier for myself as I have a de-solder gun (hakko 808) which made the job easier. Not sure how solder wick or solder pump would go.....
