Hey everyone. I am having problems with my Model 1 Sega CD. We've found some problems (probably all of them), but we are not sure what to use to replace these parts KNOWN SUSPECTS: ---------------------------------------------------------------- In the metal plate BELOW the CD tray, there is a broken piece of plastic (see video.) ---------------------------------------------------------------- The (cam gear??) below the tray that moves the tray is jamming. Whenever you try and close the CD tray, the (again, cam gear, not sure if that is the correct term) will stop turning, and you need to apply force physically with your hands to open/close it. (see video) ---------------------------------------------------------------- THAT DAMN HELIX/ARCHIMEDES SCREW. http://i.imgur.com/TptgI.jpg http://i.imgur.com/VVV09.jpg HELIX/ARCHIMEDES SCREW PROGRESS: Put hot glue on chipped part, waiting for it to dry, then will file it to the correct dimensions. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Everything else but these 3 things are working well, at least thats what I have seen. The system will turn on and load the BIOS. It is verison 1.10. The sound is ok, the video is ok, etc etc. BUT you can not open the tray because of these problems I have told you. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Also, does anyone know how to completley remove the CD tray from the bracket? ^ Thanks, omp! Cheers, Sam B ----------------------------------------------------------------
Browse through here http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?22027-Sega-CD-systems-repair-thread There is a heap of information that others and myself have put there. I am guessing (your video doesn't work) that you have the Sony driveand it sounds like you got the dreaded broken Helix/Archimedes screw.... There is a fix for it in that link as well as other things. Have a good read of that link (currently 7 pages) and see if that helps. Tray is easy to get out, as you get the tray to the front there are 2 small tabs at the front (they have a hole in each) that youcan use a pen or the like to slightly move out which dis-engages the lock.
Link Fixed. Also thanks for that article, i'll check it out. EDIT 2: put video in op EDIT 3: Where are these "tabs" you are talking about? I can't find it EDIT 4: Yep it's the Sony drive. at least i think it is. It has sony logos all over it.
Just watched the video, your tray is out of alignment by a tooth. When you fit it all back together, just ensure everything lines up. For reference I used the little tabs that you lever back to release the tray. When you fit the tray, if the tray hits these 2 tabs at the same time, you should be sweet! As for the broken plastic on the pivot point, you will just have to fabricate something to go in it's place. Also when you put it together don't forget to re-lubricate the pivot points, helix screw essentially moving parts. You can use a bit of lithium grease or I use Tamiya (RC car stuff) Ceramic Grease, which is made for RC car gears and plastic parts. Just don't use oil or WD40 or the like....asking for a world of hurt if you use that stuff.
...aand FIXED! Fixed Helix Screw using a Hot Glue Gun. Fixed Broken Piece of Plastic using a piece of metal as a brace, then glueing it with epoxy. Put drive belt in hot water Tray used to keep opening, but suddenly stopped. Tray was impossible to get in, but after a little patience, we got it there using this reference video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITXmTs0v9_4 , and a little help from Assembler Forum and Sega-16 Forum user omp! STILL NEED TO FIX: Grinding noise
Does the grinding noise sound like ch-ch-ch-ch? Mine had this problem (only noticed it AFTER I put the thing back together after repairing it....sheesh). I noticed the CD didn't have an even clearance between the CD and the tray. So when the CD was spinning the outside edge of the CD was slightly rubbing on the tray (no damage was done as it was rubbing on the out-outside of the CD where there is no data. So if yours is like this...... If so chuck a CD in and take the top part of the case off, so you can see the CD in the drive. You don't really need to connect the Mega Drive/Genesis back up. You do need the CD drive complete. On this pic where I have circled gently press down on the CD and check the clearance, it should be (from memory) 3-5mm or so. Mine had the problem where the clearance was 3-5mm on the top right (indicated circle), bottom left, bottom right BUT the top left it felt the clearance was only 2mm at most. So (borrowing a pic from the Sega-16 forum) remove these (or just the side where clearance is an issue) screws with the springs and give the spring a bit of a stretch. This fixed mine, so now it works PERFECTLY.
No, its just a long, continuous "BUZZ" noise. It randomly starts and stops, but will not last longer than 10 seconds. This video shows my issue pretty well. Gonna try and fix it like that.
Ah that grinding. That is the same switch type as I showed in Sega-16 that I fixed up. The switches are really exposed (that clear plastic is just like a hat), cleaning the switch contacts up works wonders. Oh-oh-oh Almost forgot. You have gone to the effort to get this working, I strongly encourage you to do a FULL capacitor replacement. Even if you have to send it to someone. I can guarantee you that the SMD caps on the main board have leaked......
