Thought i would ask this question because its been bugging me for years: I have a Sega Genesis Model 1 connected to a Sega CD Model 2. When I first got the Sega CD (20 years ago), it worked fine for 8 months, then the access light would randomly turn off while playing a game, generally at the end of an audio track -- usually sonic cd, ecco, or lunar 1 would do this. After the light went out, the unit would stop reading from the CD drive altogether. I sent the thing back to sega since it was under warranty, and I got back a "could not isolate fault, cd unit replaced". The replacement CD unit worked fine for about a year, then that started crapping out. I went on some AOL forum and found someone else had the same problem, and they would give the thing a good shake, and the access light would come back.... and sure enough that worked, and thats what ive been doing whenever the light goes out. Anyone happen to know if this a known issue with model 2s? And is there an easy fix for it other than shaking the unit? Thanks
Sounds like a faulty lid position detector (the thing that detects whether or not the system lid is shut). These things are notorious for bending, and once they have, the only way to fix it is to permanently jump the pins so the system thinks the CD drive is always shut. Or replace the the lid detector.
