After resoldering the IC on the model one, the stupid thing turns on but won't shut off. How does the Genesis turn on/off the CD unit? I am now dealing with both a model 1 and a model 2 with this problem.

I found the problem, TR4 is partially shorted. Apparently this is an NEC 2SB963 PNP Darlington transistor, Anyone know a supplier?

That happens when people bypass the fuse and connect a center positive barrel power supply to it.

I think something like a TIP 42 has potential to work as replacement.

I pulled one out of a much more common but still broken model 2.
