Who wants to help me settle an argument? I can't find any definitive info online about how any Sega CDX/Multimega units were produced. There's a store in town that claims there were only 5,000 built, which feels fishy to me because I've owned three units and almost every Sega enthusiast I know has held one in his hands. Also, there's a shop in California that has a warehouse shelf full of boxed units.

Anybody happen to know for sure? I'm avoiding discussion of pricing since that's something best left for the Marketplace price check thread, so I'd appreciate limiting the discussion to rarity only.

Check and compare serial numbers of several units.

If I find my MultiMega, I'll let you know the serial.

Is that meaningful if the serial numbers aren't sequential, or if they don't start at 0000001? I know that Sega isn't usually that imaginative.

Okay, my everyday unit is serial Y40-050XXX. My boxed unit is Y40-066XXX. Since they're both NTSC-NA units, I'm guessing that maybe the first three digits indicate region. Assuming sequential ordering, that means at least 15,000 units were planned if not manufactured, but there's still no good way to know. I therefore continue to doubt the 5,000 number.

If it's no bother, I appreciate others sharing their serials. I would suggest you do like I do and omit the last few digits just on principle, since these are intended to be unique identifiers.

PAL units were labeled with a special serial on the box (out of 2500 or so?). I'll post mine later.

Yeah, but do you know for sure that serial numbers were issued sequentially? If we happen to get two that are right next to each other, then we can confirm that part at least.

The real serial is on the box, on a special label.

can you explain that ? cause the one on the bottom of the unit looks like a normal serial with the y040 as hardprinted production type of the unit and the 5587 softprint changable serial number

I believe that SEGA Freak is referring to the sticker on the box, with a handwritten number (If my memory isn't failing).

Yup. Think it was a stamp. Still didn't make a picture because I'm both busy and lazy.

Ops, my bad! It wasn't hand-written. I believe I'm as much lazy as SEGA Freak (or even more), because I've mine just in a closet near my chair and I hadn't taken care of checking it.

I've taken a look just now and the sticker is black and states "Limited Edition" in white. In a white rectangle with red letters also states "Nº xxxx".
