OK, I've discussed this before and was told it was my screen being cheap that was the issue. I think now it isn't. Problem is when my 3.5" backup camera screen is plugged into a Genesis, it shows B&W with very little color in some areas. I've tried it on a dozen consoles. Results: Xbox= fine, 3 different N64= fine, Saturn= fine, Dreamcast= fine, Sega Genesis= total shit. I tried it on 5 different Genesis. 2 model 2, a model 1, a model 3, Nomad. All showed the exact same screen with the exact same color errors in the same places. Any ideas on a fix? Like say a capacitor filter or something? I know composite is shit but that's all my screen takes. I'll save the S video and RGB to component stuff for bigger consoles on my main TV set.
by any chance could this be a video format issue? if its happening on all your genesis models i doubt they're all faulty. that sounds like the same effect i was having running in 60hz mode on my pal tv via composite.
Very similar issue also happens on my older Trintron set, it also happens with my coleco vision console. From what ive read in the past, iirc it is caused by the genesis having a slightly out of spec chroma signal. Just borderline out of standard frequency range or something. Most devices would have some tolerance for this but some others are more picky and do not "lock" on the signal properly. I dont know if that makes sense from a purely technical point but thats how i understood the problem. One trick that worked for me was having the genesis and another console conected in a input selector switch. With both devices powered on, switching back and forth between the two allowed my TV to properly lock on the genesis signal and it displayed colors properly.
I may have to try the switching method. The screen does have 2 composite inputs so it could work. And the Chroma being slightly off does make sense. These cheapo LCD screens don't have the same tolerance as my old CRT set does. Then again, the screen is listed to be both NTSC and PAL compatible. Maybe I should try switching the Genesis over to PAL and see if it clears up that way.
Had trouble when selecting screens for a Sega Nomad. Had the same black and white issue. Other opinions where the screens don't like 240p images and will ry and display in 480i. If that is true or not, no idea, just moved on until I stumbled across one that A/worked and B/didn't draw more juice than the standard screen (another problem I had).
Bad news folks. My screen died when I hooked it to my model 3 Genesis in PAL mode. Screen jumped, flickered, and died. Did this 3 times before it stayed dark completely. RIP you piece of Chinese rip off shit! (Rest In Pieces! HAHA!!)
lol doh! oh well now you can look at getting a new better screen, although switching between pal and ntsc shouldnt really kill a screen lol
