I had issues with the RGB output from my 32X (jailbars) and a cable that plugged boosted sync fixed it up. Changed from something with all sorts of crappy artefacts to rock solid. Have never noticed this on my SMD when taking the RGB from it directly - just grabbed a cable from Retro Computer Shack (I think...) off eBay and it worked perfectly.

I'd try a high quality cable and see how it fares maybe... or if you want to play with the console, attack it to see what happens!

I spotted retro computer shack earlier. I'll try from there, thanks!

I went ahead and ordered the cable, it dropped on my mat this morning. I decided to try it out tonight and I have to say that it was worth every penny, no jailbars, sync or overscan problems, fantastic image and I didn't even have to open up my console : )

any difference between that and your other cable physically? or is it just a matter of build quality / cable quality

The cable is very well made and of a much higher quality than the cable that I was using previously (shielded cable, gold plated scart and stereo plug, quality flex, all that kind of stuff), it only carries RGB and also has additional components inside the scart plug.

    aditional components?
my cable has a few resistors in the scart end but thats about it, maybe some caps would help do you have or can you get a picture of the other components?

"additional components" is what was stated on the product description. I haven't thought about opening it up, but the scart plug does feel a little heavier than the other cable that I have so maybe there are caps inside? The cable is also RGB only, the previous cable was RGB/Composite I think?

may try that on mine and see if it works for the megadrive and also for the master system as both i have suffer from the jailbars via my rgb scart cable looks like it already has the resistors and i should have some caps i can use.

edit: decided to solder the caps in 220uf on the RGB wires and also added a switch between C-video and sync pins so that i could use it with another unmodded megadrive or if monitor / tv doesnt like the sync i have both options.

the SMS does not like the cable with the 220uf caps. it did work fine before adding the caps. (all be it with the jailbars)

This, seems silly masking the problem with fancy cables full of false hopes and promises.

It's very simple to do the mod, I cut the leg on the IC in mine with a pair of nose hair scissors (of all things) and it worked a treat.

There was a HUGE thread around here discussing the MD jailbar issue. Do a search and it'll tell you everything you need to know.

indeed the jailbars are still there at least for me but a hell of a lot less noticable, i dont get any audio buzz as i use RCA jacks for L and R audio straight from the chip, so seperate from the scart cable anyway.(

might try lifting the leg /removing the cap for the other fix mentioned by twimfy next time i open er up, but the caps in the scart cable did help

Absolutely, for £10 it solved all the problems I was having and pretty much arrived the next day. This also means that I don't have to open my console up, fiddle around inside it disabling and cutting things.

You can actually make out very faint jailbars if you really go out looking for them and stick your nose right up to the screen, but even then you've gone from candy stripes to pin stripes.

I also don't get any audio buzz...

I use the MD1 stereo cable from retro gaming cables, and I think the quality is perfectly fine, I do have very faint jailbars on my display (Panasonic PX70 plasma) if I scrutinize the pic but it's nothing I notice in general use.

In the old days I was used to having RF or composite so even a "mediocre" RGB cable is really nice imho. :)
I mean if people want the best possible of course go for the little mod, shouldn't be too hard.

To be honest it's probably more to do with my TV than anything, obviously the Genesis was designed with CRT sets in mind, the "sync boost" cable is just more compatible with my TV than the previous one I was using.

I always get my RGB SCART cables from retro_console_accessories on eBay, found they kick ass.
Tried some of the others in the UK, was not pleased with the build quality. Some of the wires were poorly soldered and snapped loose.
Never had that issue with retro_console_accessories! :topsy_turvy:

I'll give my original genesis 1 cable away for free if anyone wants it? All you need to do is cover the postage and it's yours : )
