Over the last few months I have slowly been buying parts for lightgun action,

Got myself a hotd2 gun I/O board (the old one), and 10x hotd2 led sensors etc (Supposedly all working, but from different people)

Well, today I have wired it up following the manual closely, powered it up and smoke started coming off gun I/O board!!

How can I work out what is stuffed? Gun I/O Board or LED Sensors (OR Both:sorrow:)

I am gutted! Cost tons to get all these parts and it took months to get it all!

Ouch! Got any photos of the location of the smoked out component?
Things like this are never easy, but don't give up!

Well nothing is really looking wrong in any particular area. Nothing really stands out (no black spots or anything even on the connectors etc). I have just unplugged everything except the VCC (Power and Ground), powered it up and no smoke or anything, Doesn't appear to be any LED lights anywhere on this board either unless im missing it. Then added the LED Sensors again, quickly powered up for 2 secs and back off and again saw smoke starting to rise. I could take a photo if It would help really but it looks fine

Could you upload a photo of where does the smoke come from? I don't really know about this boards in particular but probably it'd be quite helpful in order to find what's the problem.

Ive managed to get another working second hand gun board and 10 sensors today so ill just have to throw this stuff away

I did a meter test on each sensor and none show a short so im lost on it really, I don't wanna use any incase they damage the new working gun board

Never throw things away, you never know if you'll need spare parts!

Or sell it as broken. Someone might be able to fix it or use it for parts.

Main thing I would really like to know as two manuals im reading are both completely opposite of each other so its confusing me

Is the 12v Power from gun board to led sensor meant to go to pin 6 as I would call it (red cable going into led sensor from bottom photo) or pin 1 ( Bottom blue cable) for some reason on both my hotd 2 manuals they are opposite ways so I just don't know now lol

Most likely the opposite of how you wired it :p

Red is usually +5v, but you can never rely on that.

There were at least two versions of the game - the upright and the larger deluxe. I'm not seeing any mention of the gun board in the Sega-provided manuals. Which manual do you have? And I seem to remember two different types of HOTD gun sensor.

Is the machine running OK other than that? Is the PSU outputting the right voltages?

well I had hotd 2 ur manual and hotd 2 dx manual just looking at the wiring diagrams. Im not even using it for hotd, it's gonna be for Lindbergh however I am going to be using the old type II gun I/o board (new one ive got coming is from spicy) so I was using the old manual for the same gun board
