    Hey Everyone,
I just won and purchased a used, non working X'Eye. The seller claims it boots CD's and Carts just fine, but video is garbage. I've seen this on a post someplace else, but not the same machine. Just same system and issue. I'm gonna post a video journal on my repair efforts in hope it helps someone down the line.

I'm gonna try my normal repair steps, cleaning the system, contacts, re-flowing old solder points, and full capacitor replacement. This will be my firs X'Eye system, so I'm curious, is there any other things I should try in order to repair this system? I know it's a bit premature in posting this, since I don't have the console in my hands just yet. I just like to form a game plan.

    Thanks everyone!
    ~John

I can tell this is your first X'EYE, otherwise you'd already know how finicky the goddamn things are.

Be glad if the optics work after you work it up. I've seen at least three (with two in my hands) whose optics develop issues after the case has been opened without any obvious reason.

I found the issue, I hope it's the only one, when I opened it up, I saw it's ASIC chip had some water damage and is corroded. I tried cleaning up the contacts with a Q-Tip and some alcohol, but no dice. Time to do a transplant from a Genesis 2.
Here's a pic of the chip after I cleaned the water damage. I liked how the bad chip came pre-marked with a "X" :p

What's the best ways to remove and replace this chip and it's donor? I'm guessing a hot air rework station. Any advice?

    Thanks everyone!

208 surface mount pins that size, OMG.

I don't know users here available for such labor.

Well, its 208 to remove that one, then 208 to remove the donor one from a gen 2 and then 208 to put the donor in the xeye :p

I'm gonna tackle it, but not looking forward to it. I think im gonna purchase some solder paste and a rework/hotair gun

Hopefully it'd work back in a gen 2 later. Can't tell from the picture if damage is inside at all.

Ok looks like I have some traces to track. I removed the chip with some Chip Quik, and I can see that the pads where the water was has eaten the traces long ago. so time to break out the multimeter and find where they go and put some new wire in.... yay -_-

Hopefully in the end, I'll have a working JVC X'EYE

Yea, I gave that a shot, I was really hoping that would do it. It didn't work :( and it was because the pads have rotted away from the water. I'm getting closer now, I just need some more Chip Quik to remove a good donor chip, and a lot of patience.

The traces go to the VIDEO RAM. No wonder the video is bad. :)

That chips is a MEGA DRIVE on a chip.It has everything but memory and the CPUs on a single chip. That's why it has 208 pins.
