http://new-game.chat.ru/16bit.htm I came across some pics of what appear to be Sega consoles (or look more like bootlegs to me). It appears to be a Russian site, though I've never heard of Sega Magistr 5 and the Magistr Station. Anyone have any info on these?
Yeah, they're pirate systems obviously. There was a second line of Russian Mega Drive pirates, too, though I can't remember the name now. That "Game VCD" system there looks pretty cool, though, I gather that it's a VCD player that can play Genesis games off disc, I love things like that, especially when on top of everything they look like some entirely other system. Russia is a somewhat unexplored land of piracy. Everyone knows about the Hong Kong pirates, but Russia has just as many if not more unique pirated systems and games. ...word is bondage...
Yeah, they're pirate famicoms. The VCD ones usually come with a disc that has 300 roms on it, most of them hacks or HK originals (like Mortal Kombat.) They use some kind of funky Chinese encoding procedure that makes it hard to burn your own discs. I actually saw a DVD player that had a famiclone built in with one of these discs as the pack-in at my local Target, made my Kodak of all companies. The second line of russian clones, are you thinking of Dendy? It's one of the few famiclones I actually own. Got it on ebay for $5. http://hawanja.com/dendy.htm
I'm not sure that they are famiclones. There's a separate page on that site which is for "8bit (Magistr/Dendy)", the page linked is for "16 bit (Magistr, SEGA)", which I'd assume means Megadrive compatible.
There are craploads of pirated Megadrive/NES clones here. Newgame is one of the manufacturers, they make like 50 variants of Megadrives. If you need more info about them, I can help you :icon_bigg
