Everyone knows about Sega and it's long history of prototype systems that never saw the light of day such as the Neptune, Jupiter, Blackbelt and so on. But have any of you ever heard of the Sega Mark V (5)? No? Well feast your eyes on the below image of what was going to be Sega's next machine if they had never gone with the Mega Drive. What is amazing about this system it the detachable display unit !! But Sega aren't the only ones to have hidden hardware protos. Take a look at Nintendo's really odd looking Super Famicom proto. Thank God that they went for the final design. Back to Sega. They had many plans for their Mega Drive of which many came true. Just take a look at what they were hoping their future 16bit system would offer. (please forgive the crappy paintshop translations) Yakumo
pics source Yakumo where did you find the info and pic (makes me want to search for the genesis add i saw at a gaming website's history section that advertisis the american version of the mega modem). Also i think that super famicom prototype is based on a history of super nintendo artical i read in which they noted nintendo considered making the snes a add on to the nes due to the popularity of it.
heres the pic Heres the pic Theres a bunch other advertisements at gaming age in the special section in looking back at video game advertising. SOme great rare stuff.
Hey, I remember that ad! Oh, the memories. What was the name of the modem though... it definitely wasn't the Mega Modem. Was it going to be called the X-Band?
X-Band was made by some other company I believed because I think it was also available on the SNES if I remember correctly. Awe snap Truxton is on that ad :smt023
Ah ha, those pictures are from my top secret contacts within the industry. What's that you say? You don't belive me? :smt019 Oh well, ok I'll come clean. The pictures are from that BEEP Reprint I have here for you. The pictures are not designer views in the way that these consoles would never excist but sort of like concept designs for future projects that fell through. Yakumo
Tele-Genesis modem was the official name...the ad even stated it (along with tiny text at the bottom indicating that modem-compatible games were planned for the future ) But anyway, some of those peripherals were actually shown in an early issue of EGM (Issue 3 - 1989 I believe!). Blurry pics of the floppy drive and keyboard were actually included along with a blurry screen shot of Tel Tel Stadium (baseball)!
