I plan on modding one of my Master Systems to also accept Game Gear games. Most of the work has already been completed on the Game Gear portion and today I was thinking about a power solution. I like my mods to be simple and was considering a switch to power between between SMS and GG mode. Looking at the Master System US AC adapter, it outputs 9V DC 1A. The Game Gear uses a Genesis Model 2 AC that outputs 10V DC 0.85 A. I know the Master System is fine accepting a Genesis Model 1 AC at 10V DC 1.2A, which is what has been plugged into it for years, but does anyone know if it will have an issue with only 0.85 A? At worst I'd think it wouldnt power on but thought Id double check before moving forward. I should clarify that ideally, I'd power both the Game Gear and Master System via the same Model 2 AC adapter, with a switch between the two.
Likely wont power on @ .85 amps. but the GG should be fine accepting 9v 1A. For a switch youd want to use a spdt switch
850ma will run the masters system by itself, i use a pv 850ma on the MKIII GoodTofuFriday hooked me up with, no issue. BUT the more amps the better since the console will only use what it needs.
There's a polarity difference. Sega altered the US Game Gear to use center positive. (its original Japan/PAL design was center negative)
Good thing is since hes nodding it anyway. He can cut the traces and jump them to have the same polarity across both boards so not too big of a deal.
Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I'm aware of the polarity difference. Just wanted to make sure the SMS would power on at .85A if I were to use a Model 2 AC. When I finish the project, Ill post some pics.
well he sounded like he was combining both units together in some odd way where it will switch back and forth between GG mobo and SMS mobo in one case. maybe i misunderstood?
Even if that were the case, there would still be wires to the motherboard (which you could swap). If he is using the input jack on the console, as he mentions a switch - there is wiring you can adjust there. I am assuming hes switching the power lead to the systems, as you wont run both consoles at the same time off 1 psu - not enough amps. Only way you would need to modify the console, is if you wanted to use the unmodified PSU on both systems directly into the power jack.
Exactly- essentially putting 2 systems in 1 case and having a switch between the two. No need to power both at once.
