The metal tab is there simply to protect the sensor from damage, because it's actually VERY fragile.

And I am almost sure that the solder point it's connected to is grounded, just for reinforcement of the mechanical stand, because there's no real need for it to be grounded.

Now, if you want to make an useful test, you may bypass the whole power circuitry by connecting the Input pin of the 7805 straight to the power supply plug connector at the + pin.

That should allow the unit to power up, but it will no longer power off when you power the Mega Drive off.

In case it operates normally, you should investigate the green transistor which cuts power to the 7805 when the Mega Drive is turned off.

It's likely that the fuse is gone, too.

It wasn't actually grounded. I made it grounded to reinforce it. The problem was, I didn't look at the board layout very closely and it turns out that only one of the pins is in the ground area (the other is another part of the track). By default the metal stand just clips into the board but isn't actually connected.

is there a component list for the Sega Mega CD 2 available online anywhere?

Much of it can be decoded by what is written on the components or can be discerned by removing them from circuit and measuring them.

I picked up another broken Sega CD and fixed it to working (the CD drive is quieter too). This should make it much easier to test my other one because now I can compare readings. I'll post back when I get around to it / discover what blew.

    Thanks.
