I felt like playing old Sega CD games again, but I ran in to some issue's that I have questions about. I have both the Sega CD + Genesis and the Mega CD + MD. Also my MD is modded to switch 50/60Hz and US-EU/JAP. But how do I play import CD games? the MD mod seems to only be used by the carts and I don't feel like paying a fortune for a Datel Pro CDX while I want to test and play some JAP games. If there any hardware way to mod the Sega/Mega CD to play imports? any 'easy' way to update the bios to be multi region? I just found out I could use a tool that changes the region of an ISO, but how do I burn the ISO's? I tried to burn one but I noticed some loose mp3 files but ignored them (now I have sonic CD running without music lol) so I probably need to burn it in some kind of mixed mode and probably need to convert the mp3's and I suspect this wasn't the original format. Any help or tips are welcome! Had quite a blast playing Road Avenger and Timegal yesterday, the older I get the more fun I seem to have on those FMV click games
What is a megacart? or do you mean the datel pro cdx? if its the latter I am not prepared to pay 60-100 euro just to be able to play japanese import games, i'd rather play them on emulators for those prices so I was looking for a hardware/software mod that I might be able to do myself. Thx anyway tho
P, the region coding of the MegaCD/SegaCD is fluid and frustrating. Every region has a slightly different BIOS that looks for a hash somewhere on the game disk denoting the region. The problem is, this is a really long binary clump of data that isn't in a specific or consistent location. The result is that there's no reliable or repeatable way to change the region of the disk that works for every game. Without getting native hardware, you need to burn a PROM chip and replace the BIOS primarily. This is easiest on the first unit with the sliding drawer drive, but it's doable on every other model. Here's the link that you want. I don't think Arakon sells the chips any more, but they're common enough and the ROM image is easily found. Hope that helps you out. http://arakon.dyndns.org/tutorial/bios.html
megacart is a gen cart/flash cart made by fonzie for playing sega cd imports. You can get it here http://products.genny4ever.net/megacart_v1x.html
Thanks for all the tips and links guys! appriciate it allthough I think I might skip the megacart (maybe i'll pick one up one day) but for now i'll settle with the ConvSCD tool to change the region on the discs as this keeps my original games clean as well. Burning them seemed to be quite easy too, first convert the mp3's to wav then create a cue file to burn. By the way what's up with the serial/communications port on the genesis/megadrive? any fun stuff we can do with that nowadays?
MP3s? =( You should direct CD copy the original. Mp3s cause quality loss. But I agree, if your games can be patched it is easier/cheaper to make a patched copy than something else. However if you figure you could use a MD Flash Cartridge, the MegaCart is a good deal atleast last I remember it was 70$ shipped.
LOL, agreed! Make an image of your originals - don't download ripped versions! There's the moral value there, too! ;-) I think the MegaCart is pretty awesome - hopefully I'll be able to afford one some day! ;-)
