I was doing some restoration work a couple of hours ago on my Sega Genesis model 2, I waited hours for it to dry, it was completely dry, so I know it's not a liquid damage problem. However I plugged it in to play some Sonic 2 and of course I plug all my adapters in a surge protector, but when I did the power brick just started buzzing really loud, and quickly began to heat up and give off this horrible smell. Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? this is also not bringing any power to my Model 2 and it was working just fine a couple of hours ago...

any help would be appreciated thanks!

Does the power supply heat up when not plugged into the console?

What did you do to the board? Wash it? If you did, normal air drying over a couple hours probably wouldn't cut it.

I have done it before (wouldn't normally do it but the boards were F'ing filthy), plain water and about an hour or so on low(est) temperature in the oven (wife loved that). I didn't immerse the boards in water, simply used a wet, clean toothbrush. Boards were clean and worked perfectly, Genesis VA2.3 and Sega CD2 boards.

I didn't wet the board at all, the board was spotless after compressed air. I did however clean the plastic parts, and let them dry for 6-8 hours until I found no trace of moisture at all. Put it back together, plugged in the ac adapter into my surge protecter without it being connected to the Gen. And all the sudden it began to buzz rather loudly, and it began to get hot , and the smell of something burning came with this. I have been told to use a multimeter to check its volts but I am afraid the thing is gonna blow up or something the way it buzzes. I noticed some tears in the wire, so I patched it up with electrical tape, still buzzes, moderately less but it buzzes heats up, and the power isn't coming on with the gen, because I guess it' s not getting enough current to the jack to power it. I know my power in the gen is fine, I tested it with my volt meter.

I am also awaiting a Gen2 with a model 2 cd attachment, hopefully when it comes with all it's wires this will be resolved , until then thanks for the advice, and reading. Also I have something obscure I have to get a photo of. My model 1 Genesis where the Sony chip is supposed to be, there is a NEC chip there, the tech who I told seemed completely flabbergasted, now this is a console I got broken and fixed by merely replacing a capacitor on the underside of the board. It is a VA3 HD model, very very odd.. I should post a pic up here for all to see .

I have only ever seen one Model 1 Mega Drive that had a MB3514 video encoder, seems pretty rare.
