Back when sega released sega rally for the PC I bought a copy here in the UK distributed by 'expert software' that came in a big box. I also got one a few years later in one of those £10 for 3 games deals. That one was a budget thing in a DVD case. Anyway - my friend had a copy of sega rally for the PC that he borrowed from a friend for a few days. When I went round to play it I was really surprised as the box art was completely different and the in-game graphics looked like they had been totally re-done from the Saturn version (unlike the 2 PC versions I own that are straight ports). This one had, if my memory serves me correctly, reflections, proper transparencies for dust, windows, shadows etc and varying times of day. For the life of me I can't remember the exact title of the game and would be incredibly grateful if anyone can shed some info on the game for me. I have been keeping an eye out for one but have had no luck at all thus far. Thanks, Chris
Well, it *could* be one of those hardware-accellerated ports by Sega PC like Sonic 3D, whereas the earlier version used software rendering.
I'd love to see it too! Actually, was it in a DVD case? Gamestation are selling what seems to be a new release of it. Perhaps that's it?
It wasn't in a DVD case as last time I played said game was before they started putting games in DVD boxes. It's surprising how many different boxes/publishers there have been for sega rally. Have a look at the one in gamestation - as soon as you see the screenshots on the back you'll be able to tell. I've got a suspicion the one you're on about it the explosiv one but if by some miracle it isn't buy 2 copies and send me one rayer: I've got: Sega Rally (Saturn) - SEGA Sega Rally (PC) - Expert Sega Rally (PC) - Explosiv
Did your friend have a Voodoo or something? Sega Rally 2 seemed to have Glide support, so I wouldn't be surprised if other Sega PC titles did too, especially if the port was made some tie around 1997.
Yeah i remember there was a 3D patch for Sega Ralley that allowed it to use Direct X accleration it definetly improved things.
Voodoo cards used Glide, kind of a pre-runner to OpenGL/Direct3D. The company that made the tech were called 3DFX, though they died and were acquired by Nvidia around the time of the Geforce 2. Some Voodoo 2 cards came bundled with Sega Rally, and I'd assume that this bundled version at least had support for Glide.
