See that connector thing? Why was that there? Like was there an actual point to it? I was thinking maybe it was suppose to be an early example of the breakoff cords the Xbox implemented, hahaha, but I'm guessing it isn't, since theres a little clip holding it there tight anyhow. Another question, did a lot of games use the controller? Is there just a short list? I'm guessing the list for US would be short compared to japanese games that use it. Thanks!
There are at least 30 games or more that make use of the analogue controller, some of which play much better with it. As for the break off cord, some say there was going to be a motion sensor (years before the Wii :dance that would conect to it for the follow up to NiGHTS going under the name of Air NiGHTS. Yakumo
Yeap, it was for the tilt function (a la Kirby's tilt n tumble), before the Ps3 and the Microsoft PC variant (I give credit to wii for using infrared+gyroscopes). Mr. Naka himself spoke vaguely about this feature and air nights at different times if i remember correctly. Since then, lot's of speculation has been going on for a Wii (or Ps3?) sequel to NiGHTS. Knowing his good taste, it would be safe to assume he would prefer the Wii
It was meant to be used with an motion sensor add on that naka had planed for a nights sequal he called air nights. This idea was abandoned when Mr.Naka expressed that they had great diffculty making a proper nights sequal. The saturn's death also didn't help at all.
It's odd that it wasn't taken very far when it was put into the actual hardware first. Noones ever found anything on it i'm guessing?
AIR NiGHTS would indeed have utilised some form of gyroscopic sensor for its control, though as many of you already said the game didn't get far because Sonic Team worried about the existence of a sequel ruining what made the original special in the first place - even though it didn't mind releasing a festive-themed sampler or the many NiGHTS cameos that have occurred since. I don't really know whether the add-on for this controller made it into a working prototype stage or if Sega kept the cord like that just in case such a title was ever made, but considering what ultimately happened to any projects the detachable feature proved totally useless... P.S. There was a brief mention of AIR NiGHTS in an issue of the UK's official Dreamcast magazine that may prove more helpful, but I don't have my back issues anymore so unfortunately I can't really give much further information on this subject!
