I bought some great shooters for the Saturn in the last weeks and I thought it would be more fun to play with an arcade stick instead of the gamepads.

What is a good Arcade Stick for Saturn? Any recommendations?

Maybe there is an adaptor available to connect the PC Engine XE-1Pro or C64 Joysticks? (which I already own).

The Fighting Stick SS is pretty good as a third party stick.

Classics are the Virtua Stick and the Virtua Stick Pro which are both very high-quality.

    Virtua Stick (HSS-0136):

    Virtua Stick Pro (HSS-0130):

The first stick is bad. Sure, it has all those regulators for shot frequency ect., but its just shit to play with IMO. Too slippery buttons, weird design in general... I'm not surprised this was the one to be releases in the west :p

I happen to like the Saturn stick that ASCII made. The buttons are a little on the small side, but the stick is a nice inverted teardrop with that clicky Neo-Geo styled response I like so much. GameQuestDirect has a bunch for sale:

It's not a popular peripheral since the Hori stick is superior in almost every way. But it was the only third-party stick officially released in the States.

For real arcade feeling the Sega Virtua Stick is the only way to go. Based upon the Astro City arcade cabinets !

the virtua stick pro - basically an astro/arcade control panel - is probably the sexiest piece of kit ever made.

everytime this stuff gets brought i'm my answer is going to be the same because i think its the best way.

    Build your own.

you get the button layout you want, the buttons you want, the stick you want, the material you want, the shape you want, everything to your specifications.

Building is a good idea but what if he is poor at making stuff? I'd rather just go out and buy the virtua Stick or the pro version but that may be because I'm accustom to using Astro Cit cabinets.

get someone to make it for you. Join up on the Shoryuken.com forums and ask around in the tech support, there's people willing to do it for a price and they come out nicer than any of these sticks for the saturn.

Hmm, they are some pretty nice sticks. How much do these people charge for such a stick? I mean you can probably pick up the Virtua Stick Plus for about 5000 to 10000 yen (25 to 50 pounds).

Plus? You mean the VS Pro (hss-0130)? I saw it a few times on yahoo for at least 15'000 (loose), the common price was around 20'000 (boxed, but the box ALWAYS has some wear -.-).

Yes, I meant Pro. Forget Yahoo for stuff like that or anyother so called "Aladdin's cave" because you'll always pay over the top. My local Hard Off had an unboxed unit last year for only 7000 yen ! Mint as well it was but being a married man with a wife that kicks off over just the normal Vitua Stick and my Dreamcast Sawa stick, I thought I'd better not take the chance with it. It's so big it's pretty hard to hide :crying:

Place it aside your sofa and tell your wife its a video game design-TV remote-tray. If you allow her to place coffee on it, I can't imagine any problems with it ^^

wow, so much replies. Thanks to everyone

The Virtua Stick looks great and solid. The Pro version is impressive, but too big. Don't have space for that. So I think I will go for the standard version. The ASCII pad may be also a good choice, but the design is a bit boring.

Building my own stick is not a good idea. I never did that before and I think I would fail. Anyway I don't have enough time to build it myself. I try to build a Virtual Boy Cartridge since months. I have everything ready, but actually I don't want to waste my valuable spare time for soldering over 40 wires. But I hope that I will finish it in a very cold winter

btw, I own a very good Arcade Stick already. It's for my C64 and I would like to connect it to my Saturn. But I think that's not possible, isn't it?

Hacking a joystick for use on another platform is a pretty straightforward affair. You need a donor encoder from a controller meant for use on the target system, and you need to do some wiring. The guys at GamesX have a handy guide that covers the basics and assumes you have some basic electronics skills.

    http://www.gamesx.com/stickadapt/

Note that guide assumes also that you're using a Neo stick or you've torn the encoder out of your controller you're using and have access to the raw switch contacts. There's a more generic guide somewhere in the forums that I'll try to dig up for you.

The Virtua Stick is a great choice. Very rugged, durable and responsive. If you didn't like the layout, you could alsways go for a custom arcade stick from a supergun manufacturer, but these will be expensive.

    Here is an example:

MAS Sticks are known for horrible customer service btw. they almost always pull through but don't expect to know when. haha.If you go to their brick and morter store if they're building someone's stick in the back, and you want it. they'll sell it to you and just make their stick again. :-\

Cool. Now gut the stick, buy some Sanwa parts, throw them in, and find your gameplay improve many fold. Unfortunately all the Saturn sticks are of questionable quality (read, crap parts).

Mh really? I considered the Virtua Sticks very high-quality. Well, but I won't customize it anyway because I don't want any customized stuff in my collection despite some regionfree-modded consoles.

But when I have the Arcade Cabinet I'm planning to buy in a year (when my purse regained its power after my trip to Japan), I'll definately care about good buttons, panels and stuff (white buttons on that New Net City panel... that'd be great) =)

ps: Paid 126,90euro for it (171,42$ / 20'856円), insured shippig included. I think the price is ok because it's been a long time since I saw a boxed HSS-0130 on GERMAN ebay. Even if I got it for about 30euro in Japan (which I doubt), I may had to pay about 90euro shipping (via seamail!). So I'm happy with it, although the box and one part of the interior is slightly damaged. :)
