ok my friend just won an eBay auction for an Import saturn and several games. I just bought 2 of the games off her (the saturn and the games are for her boyfriend) Sonic Jam and Funky Head Boxers Plus. Unfortunately the games have no covers on them and look like CD-R's Sonic Jam has title of the game and "CC-394" and Funky Head Boxers Plus has the title and "CC-366" screen printed onto the fronts of them. Are these beta discs or are they CD-R rip offs. I will post scans of the discs later. EDIT: Here's the auction http://cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Saturn-Gra...MES-Japan_W0QQitemZ260021656027QQcmdZViewItem
Can you take a better picture of the two discs in question? A more detailed view would be very helpful. My guess is on pirated material, though, since if it was a beta I'd guess that the seller would know and price accordingly. He also didn't mention the fact that they were on CD-Rs. Edit: Just so you know, I'm no expert on Saturn discs. I'm just trying to help with what little knowledge I have on the subject .
Doesn't look legit to me. Has the friend received the items yet? Does he have a method of playing the game (if it's on CD-R) or is it a pressed disc? Hehe, worst case scenario is that it may be a Hong-Kong pirate...
yes SHE has. How else do you think I scanned the disc. The auction was for the saturn as well as the games. I'm going to have my Friend e-mail the seller later about these.
Lol, sorry I tend to read fast and miss things . Who knows... it could possibly be a beta. I would try running the disc to see if there is a different title screen, but I'm no expert on the Sega Saturn...
Yet another non Saturn expert weighing in here. While I do understand that betas can be placed onto whatever media that the developer wants, if this was in fact a copy of an in house Sega beta I would think they would have used their own official media. Also, why would it be screened onto the disc? Seems like a waste of time when it's just a beta and this would have been back in 95 - 96.
I did notice something. Both Discs's "code numbers" are on the inside of the CD ring in the center of the disc Again. Why, I dunno. Probably for wquality control purposes or something?
Both Discs won't play in my Saturn (I have an Action Replay device for imports and seeing as these are japanese games I thought it would work. The Saturn is my most Import heavy system I own. 4 imported games.) I dunno if the white saturn my friend got will infact play the games or not. We will be testing this later because we just started college and everything is getting a little bit hectic arround here.
Saturn Betas / Review Code CD's i saw looked much different. Try to boot them in a chipped Saturn or use the "Swap Trick" in a retail console. If it's final code i would say that these are simple copies.
I've seen only one "beta" for the saturn at Segagagadomain. And these look nothing like them. I'm starting to think that my friend got ripped off, and big time.
I'm almost positive they are simple CD-R copies if they were "real" beta they'd used Sega Master CD-R to write them onto but then again who knows for sure...
could those be some of those infamous "Hong Kong Silvers"? I remember that back int those days one could get pressed Copies of Saturn games via auction houses that needed a modded saturn/swap trick to boot.
I've been away for a few days thanks to a Hard Drive upgrade so I missed this thread. I can tell you 100% that those discs are Honk Kong pirates ! 100% guaranteed ! Yakumo
How is it a big time rip off to pay under $60 for an import Saturn and a bunch of games and accessories? It's not exactly like they were purchased because they were said to be betas, you just assumed that they were after they were received.
Agreed. I paid $30 for my US Saturn, and it was in pretty bad shape. $60 for a Japanese Saturn (with a box and two controllers, no less) is a pretty snazzy deal .
I do believe he's saying it's a "rip" because all the games were presented as originals. Anyone who sells CD-Rs as originals should be shot. It's quite frustrating as a buyer to find out that you've been scammed. -hl718
