Sega Saturn Capicitor and Soldering advice.

    Hey,

    I've been having a problem with my Model 1 PAL Sega Saturn for the past week. The problem is similar, if not the exact same one, as this thread: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?47661-Sega-Saturn-powers-itself-off/page3

    I got in touch with the thread maker and he gave me some advice about how to fix the problem. I'm going to have to solder/replace the capacitors and the transistor in the Sega Saturn's PSU.

    I need some advice however on buying the right capacitors. I know the transistor I am to use but I don't know much of the capacitors.

    Can anyone give me a list of capacictors that are in the Saturn and suitable replacements? Prehaps a drawing, or plan of the PSU and where each one might go?

    For example, as a list:

    Capacitor In Saturn 1 - Replacement Capacictor 1.
    Capacitor In Saturn 2 - Replacement Capacictor 2.
    Capacitor In Saturn 3 - Replacement Capacictor 3.

    Also, any dos and don'ts? I am not eager to lose this Saturn.

    It may well depend on your board revision. Just change all the electrolytics - they'll have values on them.

    If you're not confident in doing that, I would advise against doing it yourself if you don't want to damage the console further.

    Thanks for the reply retro.

    Well the machine was no longer turning on at all, so I've got nothing to lose. If I damage the board I could always buy a second Sega Saturn and transplant the PSU.


    I soldered in the transistor. With the transistor the Seag Saturn turns on and off rapidly, but actually does gain power. I wonder if it's a capacitor which is needed now, or if the transistor was badly placed? Or perhaps I put it back together badly?

    Did you make sure that there's a good thermal connection between the transistor and the heat sink? My saturn turned itself off after a short while because this part was overheating, I replaced it with a newer model with a higher thermal tolerance and actually used some heatsink compound to make sure it had good conductivity to the heatsink.

    Could you upload a picture of the board please? I also replaced all the caps on my PAL PSU so I should be able to help

    You van send the psu into someone and have them repair it for you if you don't feel confident, all depends on location..

    id do it for you.

    Thanks man, I just fixed it however.

    I followed advice from another poster and managed to solder in the transistor.

    But you're very kind for the offer.
