As the title says, is there a list of which pal cardboard game cases also had releases in the plastic cases? I know things like SEGA RALLY and Virtua Fighter 2 did for example.. but there are a whole number of games I'm not sure about. I do believe Story of Thor 2, Exhumed and Dark Savior are cardboard only though? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Curious to know if Sonic 3D, Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2 had a plastic cases for example. Thanks in advance guys!
Yes - try satakore.com. My book, when it is eventually finished, would have the information, too! also... Yes, yes* yes and yes, no and yes * Exhumed is actually marked as both on Satakore, but I've never seen it in the plastic case and they don't provide a photo.
Thank you so much! I totally forgot about that site and didn't realise how much detail it had! Exhumed plastic case? Never in my life seen one so I think it's an accidental mistake! Shame though, would love exhumed, dark savior and story of thor 2 as plastic cases oh well
no freakin way.... DO WANT. It's the first Saturn game I owned as a child so it holds a VERY special place in my gaming heart. Make my Christmas magical and sell it to me? /cry Can you take a picture so I can at least drool? I can't find any images online of a plastic variant..
i would sell a kidney just to own it.. my god.. never EVER seen one in all my days. Must have been released in only certain parts of europe or a VERY and i mean VERY limited reprint later in the saturns life?
My understanding is that Sega Europe agreed to a strictly limited repressing of Exhumed (in the later style plastic case) at the insistence of the UK Official Sega Saturn Magazine, whose editorial team championed this game in the first place, leading to Lobotomy Software winning the contract to produce conversions of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. From what I can tell, this particular version was released in late 1997 - around the same time Lobotomy's two other Saturn games appeared - and would have been accompanied by an exclusive sampler to be made available via SSM as a cover disc featuring demos of all three of their titles plus a standalone copy of Death Tank Zwei. This was actually promoted in SSM over several months as something that experienced various delays, initially because of licensing issues with id then GT Interactive before disappearing off the radar entirely, despite a finished copy supposedly being ready for mass production.
Yeah I was reading about that though SSM funny enough, the demo that was supposed to come out was replaced with the panzer dragoon saga one. I guess I'll really have to keep my eyes out. I honestly want a plastic case so bad for my favourite fps of all time!
Wasn't it Sega Flash 7 that became the eleventh hour substitute for Lobotomy's unreleased cover sampler? This would at least explain why over half of its content was recycled from the previous volume. I'm almost certain it was former SSM editor Rich Leadbetter who once said - during a recent(ish) interview - that it was his idea to push SOE into letting them issue the first disc of Panzer Dragoon Saga, mainly because he didn't think just including the opening FMV sequence on the Flash series was enough of a showcase for what he felt was the Saturn's last great title. On the other hand, it might have been Christmas NiGHTS that became the replacement title, as that had already been made available the previous year as the centrepiece reward of a software promotional campaign here in the UK. I seem to recall the only way you could originally get a copy of this was to buy any two games at participating retailers in a set that included NiGHTS, Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition, Sega Worldwide Soccer '97, Fighting Vipers and Virtua Cop 2, although the later SSM version lacked a cardboard sleeve.
I'll have to look back but I think it was PDS, I recall reading the issues in order and them going on and on about it as the games were closer to completion but due to issues with getting the OK from publishers they couldn't. Anyway, thanks for the help guys, much appreciated... Now to try and find a damn plastic exhumed now :/
I've had a look through, and it seems you were right - the first disc of Panzer Dragoon Saga did indeed become the replacement for that Lobotomy sampler. While the fourth volume only repeated a few playable demos, by Sega Flash #5 it was clear those reponsible for compiling the series were experiencing a shortage of new content, resulting in more and more games (especially certain videos) being repeated on later titles. Just how many times did even the most die-hard Saturn fan need to see the opening sequences to PDS or Enemy Zero, and was there really nothing better that could have been used than recycling Sega Rally nearly two years after its original release? By contrast, the Japanese equivalents had some truly brilliant content, including promotional clips for quite a lot of unreleased software. Yes, I realise the footage of Sonic The Fighters and Virtua Fighter 3 was sourced from their arcade versions, but at least some effort was still being made long after SOE gave up. Although it's hardly an essential for any collection due to the supposedly final build actually being a 60% prototype, a PAL variant of the timed demo for The House Of The Dead that saw a standalone release in Japan would have improved the last European Flash disc significantly. Add to this the playable sampler for PDS and a level from Burning Rangers, a track from Sonic R or even a similar trial of Winter Heat like that for its predecessor and it might have been far more worthwhile. Considering how much SSM loved Capcom's work, I'm surprised they didn't push to get something from Marvel Super Heroes on there, though in hindsight a third party compilation was sorely lacking... I can just imagine how different things may have become if we UK gamers could sample the likes of what importers continued selling us long into 1999!
Oh wow, I forgot about that! It's a shame it never saw the light of day. DEATH TANK! What a game Yeah, I'll have to see if I have a plastic case version, but I don't think I do. Another variant to get *sigh* My friend showed me this in his shop the other day... before announcing it had already been sold. I nearly cried - my copy doesn't have this!
Look, the topic is PAL Saturn game cases. The thread is a year and a half old. If you're going to bump it, have something to add to the topic. If you know of PAL games that had both styles of cases and have not already been mentioned, by all means post them. Don't reply to an 18 month old thread on PAL Saturn game cases asking if anyone wants to play Netlink. Likewise, don't duplicate that topic by making a new one asking if anyone wants to play Netlink. And there's no reason to make that post a poll, asking if it's a good post. If you don't have anything meaningful to add to an old thread, don't bump it pointlessly.
