What makes you think this is the server software?

 

Could well be NetLink stuff. I might have a copy of the manual somewhere but I can't remember. I'll have a dig sometime.

You don't have to compile Linux (if that's what you meant). Download a live-cd version like Knoppix. Everything runs from the CD, so nothing has to be installed. If the hard drive can be read, it will most likely be mounted automatically.

 

Also, what kind of HDD interface are we talking here. I would assume IDE or SCSI. Provided you can see the actually drive in a more modern machine, you could use VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org) to install OS/2 or NT 3.51 into a virtual machine then use the Raw Disk mode (http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html, search for "Using a raw host hard disk from a guest") to directly access the hdd from the virtual machine.

Ideally you would make a byte-for-byte copy of the original disk first, plus, I'm sure there is some way to convert the backup image into a format a virtual machine can read. (http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/, this can create hdd images from a physical disk that you can use in a vm)

Maybe having a VM of every old OS could come in handy here, if you have to recover files more frequently. iirc, VMware allows direct access to mounted harddrives from within the VM, they don't have to be legible to the host system.

 

FYI: Sega Saturn Netlink (USA only, 28.8kbps modem) used direct-dial Xband software for gaming; there were no servers. There was a central web portal you could connect to with various links, services, and a list of Netlink owners who registered with the site. You would e-mail them to see if they would like to play, and then ask for their phone number. That was the extent of it.

The Japanese modem (14.4, also Xband with a card slot) might have used a server - I can't remember, but I believe it did. Someone here must know, or could just read one of the Japanese game manuals to find out. Perhaps the Japanese server code was one possible solution under review for USA.
