Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum , I was just wondering, could someone tell me please what does the SEGA Saturn System Disc KD02 enable a Saturn console to do, it's the black label disc. Thank you.
The "System Disc" was intended for developers, publishers and members of the press to boot/play early copies (on CD-R) on a non-modified SEGA Saturn. There are two different type of System Discs out there, one is exclusively to boot 3'rd party games on CD-R as where the other is exclusively to boot 1st party games.
...and black one was for the 3rd party and if my memory serves me correctly the red one was for 1st party.
Do go into a bit more detail: You boot a system with a KD02 (or KD01) in the drive, and from then on until the next power cycle (resets are okay) that console (or, to be really exact, that console's drive) won't check the security rings of inserted Saturn discs any more, thus allowing you to boot CD-Rs (as well as originals obviously). Regional lockout stays in effect though. The difference between KD01/02 is the maker code, 01 allows booting anything Sega, 02 anything but Sega. Or maybe the other way round... (But if you get your hands on either disc, nothing stops you from editing the maker code as well as region of an image (before burning it) to match whatever you need for your setup.)
I highly doubt a dump of said disc will be of any interest, since the magic of these discs is not readable / copyable.
I'm curious about that too. IIRC I read somewhere that the disc designated 'KD-03' is supposed to be something dev-related for the Dreamcast (a DC drive unlocker? Sounds kinda useless, no?), but that'd hardly fit with the rest of this topic, so...
I've heard that it could unlock the security drive that blocks accessibly from reading CD-R backup games i think, so meaning that once you use it you don't have to keep swapping discs everytime. Just an assumption
Maybe useful to pirates during when the Sega Dreamcast was still relevant i guess, and no need to swap boot cds or region boot cd programs.
I was able to boot various SEGA and non-SEGA games with the black system disc. As said, there's also a red and a blue disc.
