So i bought an XRGB mini off ebay. I also bought this JP21 cable http://www.ebay.com/itm/201139255187?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

When i hook it all up, it is a blue screen with no input. I hit RGB on the remote and it goes black but comes back blue with no input. Also the input light on the box doesnt light up. I was under the impression this should just work.

EDIT: i realized the guy sent me a genesis cable too so i tested my genesis and the XRGB works so it's something with the cable. how did i buy the wrong cable? or is it defective?

That is what the listing says, but this is pretty odd nonetheless. Did you try using a Composite or S-Video to make sure your Saturn is outputting video fine.

You can still ask for a refund thanks to that eBay guarantee or something.

Do you have an NTSC or PAL Saturn?

PAL Saturn have 9V on pin 9 while NTSC hardware has c-sync. I personally route 9V to that 9th pin on my Japanese hardware so my EU SCART cables work correctly.

    I'm thinking it is defective.

    It's NTSC.

Try adjusting the sync level in the XRGB-mini's menu.

I have the same cable and mine worked out of the box with my mini, no problems and no adjustments needed. Check your Saturn, or contact seller. I am sure they will help you out.

You made mention that you purchased your XRGB mini from eBay. Did you purchase it as new or used?

If used, perhaps there is an issue with the mini?

You did buy the right cable for the Saturn - you connect that RGB-21 cable to the mini-din to RGB-21 adapter that plugs into the mini.

You said you had another TV... you should try that out as well. If it does not work; I would question the mini and advise the seller - arrange a return for a refund.

If the seller does not accept returns, you can still file a claim through eBay... your purchase is protected.

Are you sure that the mini-din to JP-21 adapter is just that, and not a SCART adapter? What does your genesis cable labelled as? You said that one works? The mini should come with the mini-din to JP21, but it could have been switched out by someone and resold on ebay

yea the genesis works perfectly. the auction calls the genesis cable an NTSC cable. i asked the seller if the adapter is not Jp21, waiting on a response.

also the seller of the cable tested the cable with the same Saturn as mine and it worked fine. very reputable seller.

Who did you buy the mini from? I'm wondering if the adapter cable is the wrong type

So the seller got back to me. The Genesis SCART cable he sold me with the XRGB is Euro. So I assume this means my RGB adapter cable is Euro and i need to get a JP21 adapter cable? or a Euro Saturn cable?

The Saturn and the Genesis do not have the same connector. You need a JP21 Saturn cable (per your region, since IIRC the connector pinouts are the not the same) OR you can get a Euro SCART to xRGB Mini adapter and use a Euro one.

JP21 and SCART are 2 different standards that use the same connector. The adapter that you have for your mini appears to not be the original (which is JP21), but is for SCART. You can either buy a JP21 adapter and a Genesis JP21 cable, or swap out your Saturn for a SCART cable so then you will have your genesis cable and saturn cable working with the mini.
