<<<<< Yep that's why I am 30p worth of fun guaranteed ! (Chech under my name if you are wondering what I mean). I've had that up there for ages! It refers to the good old days of arcade and it was a sign above the door on the way into one of my old arcade haunts.

We have 10 to 50 yen arcades here full with Retro goodness. Also most if not all modern shooters are only 100 yen a blast! The exchange rate is pretty bad these days so 1 pound is about 135 yen. A few month ago though it was more like 230 yen so you can see how cheap it is. A can of coke cost 120 yen so a 10 to 50 yen game is bliss, especially when it's a classic

    Portables killed Arcades

This isn't news though Sega's been hurting for a while. Hopefully those layoffs go to sonic team.

I feel sorry for anyone who didn't get to experience arcade gaming from 87-97.

True. It's sad to see them turn into mainly a publisher with most of the games being developed by US or Euro houses. It's few & far between now that we get "real SEGA games". Maybe 1, 2 or 3 per year? Valkyria? VF5? Yakuza 3?

Hopefully the layoffs will result in more internal games, as the article suggests. Also, slashing the arcade R&D makes sense. The move right now is toward MUCH cheaper & "mainstream" solutions like Nintendo is doing with their Wii-based arcade system.

I'd like to see a list of the doomed arcades. Surely tons of CLUB SEGA spots but could you imagine Akiba GIGO closing?

Thats when God of Hardcore caught two teens having it off in the unloved Cruisin USA machine in the back of the arcade. Probably the closest he has managed to get to a real naked woman. ;)

I read about Sega planning these closures, then I stumbled across this: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=b33_1234904065 watch to the very end and the last statement!

So, I am glad that they are concentrating their efforts appropriately lol

If this crisis is good for something that is serving as an excuse to make cuts. Most companies are doing now what just months ago would've been unthinkable of due to heavy PR risks.

Even companies that were unsustainable well before the crisis are using it as justification for their failure.

About SEGA, seriously, who cares anymore? and this comes from one of the biggest fans the brand has on this site...

Now arcades, the problem is as simple as the fact that those stopped being innovative years ago. The last great idea on this industry was that game psy-phi, and it got canned.

To put it simple: you can put together a cabinet using a i7 extreme with dual SLI 280GX cards running a game based on CryEngine2 with all settings on high and it would blow away any console game, and for just a fraction of the price of a Daytona cabinet 12 years ago.

Yet, no company is doing that.

Those of us that frequent Sega arcades. There are 3 in Shibuya alone, and more than that in Shinjuku. At least for now.

When was the last time you went to an arcade to actually make that assumption?

And a fraction of the bottom line from 12 years ago as well.

Is sonic team part of those cuts? THat could only bring Good. If the Fiends behind Sonic Unleashed's Warehog are still employed....I have lost all faith in mankind

You can smoke in Gamestops in California? In New York, you're basically limited to your car and house.
