I heard that this was actually in production stages before it got the axe due to "safety concerns" that people would injure themselves wearing this, I also heard that there was a warehouse full of them and that they were later destroyed.

Does anybody know if these things were ever leaked? or if any other images or video got released other than the 2 below?

If this really did go into production, then shouldn't there of been a game or two to go with it?

  2. Ever seen the Spike Lee movie Clockers? It's featured prominently in that. Don't know what that says about how far development got, but it's pretty cool anyway.

Atari was making one for the Jaguar. I've got the images lifted off it's ebay auction, if it's any indication Sega probably didn't get past the prototyping phase.

This bitter experience is by no means reason to point a finger at Sega and laugh. Virtual reality has long been the bane of hardware companies in the console industry, besting even icons like Atari and Nintendo. Fans of the Atari Jaguar might remember that console's failed attempt at a virtual reality headset which was developed by Virtuality. Set to retail at $300, it actually got farther along than Sega's did, even featuring a built-in microphone but lagging console sales and a mounting deficit caused Atari to shelve the project permanently. Only a single game was ever put into production for it- a 3D version of Missile Command.

And heres a wired article mentioning the unit:

    http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/1.06/sega_pr.html

If anything the SegaCD and 32x would've pushed this thing back. $300 is steep when there are two addons coming out, who knows what Sega would've actually priced it at.

    The article also mentions this:

    And google turns up this:

There are some other cool things on there such as a full motion Crusin USA cab. Man I'd love to have that.

Heh, I used to have a pair of 12-Seater motion simulators... Awesome pieces of technology:

The red one worked fine, I won it on eBay for only £2,000 (Sold it for a TON more)

The grey one was eventually scrapped, as it never worked, and had many missing parts:

Does anybody know if any of the original VR headsets did acutally go into production? and are there any known leaks of these units?

it is, its afterburner in a cab sega world bournemouth had one.

If any one has one they dont want ...

  11. The R360, yeah. I think they were surprisingly commong given how much they must have cost. It's somewhat unfortunate that more games weren't converted for them. Power Drift would have fantastic.

    That's the R360.

It would have been Afterburner 2 in a similar cabinet, only rolled forward/back and a little side to side, not full rotation like the R360. G-Loc Air Battle was a plane-shaped design iirc...

    Yes Sir!

The Jaguar VR headset is very impressive. It actually tracks faster than the SU2000 polhemus tracking units. One issue with that speed though is for some it can make some feel a bit woozy. I've never had an issue with it nor has anyone I've ever had test it, except for my wife.

On a side note, I found an early tracking unit for the Jag VR's recently (tracker shell posted on my site in the hardware section). Rather than using the IR tracking of my other 2 it uses the Polhemus tracking of the SU2000's. The exciting part of this is if an SU2000 Visette can be re-wired to fit the tracker shell input then in theory it would work as a Jaguar VR unit with full tracking. Haven't had a chance to test my theory, but it creates the possibility of doing a run of Jag VR's using Visettes.

Wasn't the R360 capable of playing games other than just After Burner and G-Loc? I'm pretty sure I've seen one before running Galaxy Force II, though to be honest I remember the R-360 more for being the only arcade system that (allegedly) decapitated a spectator - is this really true, or was it a slight exaggeration on somebody's part? Either way, I recall there being an enquiry following a death in some Japanese arcade, and the R360 was definitely mentioned...

  19. Hah, I never heard about an R360 killing someone. Seems unlikely, but I guess you never know.

The system was capable of playing other games like Galaxy Force II and Power Drift, but those wouldn't have taken proper advantage of the rotation. Only the special version of G-Loc made for the R360 worked properly.

I remember my father playing this arcade.
I think the game was Galaxy Force 2.
There was a headphone port ;)
