There are some things I would really like to know about the development of Seiken Densetsu 2 (aka Secret of Mana). Since the game was to be a launch title for the SNES CD it had to be altered to fit a game cartridge when the CD project was dropped. This resulted in simpler graphics and almost half the game being removed.

So does anyone know exactly what was removed?

Was the translation made before or after the mutilation?

Is there a copy of the original game out there?
(And if thats the case: who do I have to &#%?$ to get it? :)

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Interviews with Ted Woolsey from around the US release of the game seems to indicate that translation was started after the move to cartridge format was made. (Though, if memory serves me right, even he confirmed in interviews the existence of the game as a Snes CD title)

Also, I'd say the correct term isn't mutilation, but salvaging.

There is an english fan translation. Dont get fooled by it. I didnt really know SD3 whas planned to get released for the SNES CDROM! Now i see why they needed all those compression methods...

Ted Woolsey said that Secret of Mana was first scheduled to be a CD game for the Sony CD-ROM and might have probably been much longer, he said that the team turned it back into a cartridge game, but he said too he thinks players might get a sense that something is missing.

He said also he was given just 30 days to translate the text for Secret of Mana and he mostly would wait for a game to be finished before he started because there was always so many countless changes in the story and the people who write the games work up until the very last minute and his work might become out of date really quickly if he started before the game was finished.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm currently playing a fan translation of the SNES version but I'm still curious about what was removed. But at least I get the extra dialogue now.

If someone should come across the CD version somewhere please let me know. There should at least be a ROM or ISO out there, right?

    Thanks! ^^

I highly doubt the existence of an ISO is out there floating on the Interwebs... I could easily be wrong... I would like to know as well.

P.S. Yeah, definately a great avatar. I remember seeing that picture awhile back... laughed so hard! Such a cute kitty!

Now you're mixing the numbers ;D

SD2 originally intended for CD-ROM, SD3 cartridge from the start (most likely), and SD3 was fan translated ( LNF Translations/SOM2Freak/Neill Corlett), dunno if anyone did any SD2 fantranslation (I know there's FuSoYa's "expanded/VWF" script, but not sure if that was a full retranslation or not)

EXACTLY! and i think there was never a confirmation that SD2 was started for cd rom, but only that they would have had extra space for it i think they said "a larger storage media" (probably they were enhancing the cartdridge's Mbs like it hapened later with other games and were referring to it.). remember that some of the first snes games were just 4Mbs... while in the end mosters like 32mbs and more appeared. that's 8x space!

And to think of it, then those old "small" (compared to modern terms in space) Japanese, and European games from the SNES were gems, in which they had tons of great playing time. Compared to nowadays, where the games are gigabytes big. But they can (at times) be completed in a matter of hours sadly. Where the old "small" games, took to a degree days to complete. So even though they weren´t on a CD, then they were big. And bulky. But then again, alot of old PC games had tons of playtime in them too. And well you know the story again then.
