    Foreword : Apologies if I ramble. :110:

I have been working abroad a lot for the last 4 years and I've not seen my games collection for a long time. It's currently collecting dust in a friends house and he needs the space. I can ask another friend to look after it but it's a case of can I be bothered with it all?

A lot of the consoles and machines I never played a great deal when I had them so if I sell them I probably won't miss them but if I think too hard will I regret it? I'm not in debt so I am not selling them to pay for something else, just more a case of not playing them and unlikely to play them for a few years.

I have a number of machines and I have decided I am going to keep.

Every Puyo Puyo and Mahjong games, some shooters and some fighters.

Wondermega + All Mega CD Games + Some Megadrive Games + 32X + Games
    Master System (Jap) + Games
    Famicom + Games
Original Gameboy + Pocket + Color + Games
    Playstation 3 + All PS3 Games + Some PS2 + Some PS1

In the pile I'm thinking about getting rid of

Dreamcast + Everything (Except Mahjong + Puyo) - Never got too excited about the Dreamcast when it came out, bought it long after it was dead and collected about 180 games, but it lacked shooters (its sad when the Master System has more...), most of the Fighters are now on other machines or can be bought as Arcade boards / Carts cheapish and apart from a few puzzle games I can say I never miss it.

Neo Geo + Everything (except a few Mahjong Carts) - I love the machine, but I lack time to play it and it takes up far too much space for what it is. Will miss KOF 95, 98, SS2, Thrash Rally, Ghost Pilots and Super Sidekicks.

Neo Geo CD + Everything (except the usual) - Never played it much when I had it, bought Metal Slug and never played it...

Super Famicom - I'm still debating this one, but most of the game I would play would be the early stuff like Pilot Wings, Super Mario World, F-Zero and a few other games. The Super Famicom is a machine I like but never loved like the Megadrive.

Saturn - Great machine as it has a ton of Shooter, Mahjong games, Fighters and puzzle games. I probably have too much junk so will slim it down.

Gamecube - I bought as it was cheap but it's an awful system with hardly any games I want to play. Probably been out of the box twice...

Xbox (Jap) - Yes I am one of the tens of people that bought a Japanese Xbox, but thinking about it most of the games were bad, sure you had Halo and Halo 2, PGR and PGR 2 and Forza but there was a ton of junk on the machine.

PC Engine - I love the PC Engine it does have some great games but hmm I'm not sure, I love the Mahjong games on it and the Shooters and Puzzle games but I am not sure about everything else, even though I love the Master System and it's platformers and other weird games the PC Engine does feel dated, maybe it's the wrong word but I the PC Engine compared to other machines like the Master System feels cheap and plasticiky. Even the GT feels bloated and the screen is awful. I think after the Megadrive and Saturn I have the most games on this system too.

Neo Geo Pocket - Bought as I like Samurai Spirits but found the screen nasty and never played it much.

Game Gear - No matter how much I play it, I still can't get over the god awful screen, even though the PC Engine GT screen is worse the GG seems too white and washed out.

FM Towns Marty - Can you say Hentai? Good well that's basically all I managed to buy on the Marty, it has some cracking Mahjong games though but again it's too big and bulky, but if I sold it I will probably feel a pang of pain.

Playstation Family - Can believe that I would buy a PS3 new and still like it, not going to sell most of the games I have but I have some games that I just never played and unlikely to do so ever... like Devil May Cry and some other games that I can't even remember...

I worked out I could sell about 20 odd systems and about 1500 games (yes that is two zeros with a one and two in front of it) and would probably have enough to be happy but still knowing I don't have them anymore...

    Thoughts?

Don't worry, I got rid of most of my stuff as it was taking too much space (and quite a hustle if you move as much as I do) so eventually I sold most of it like you are planning and kept only the "best" well best the things I like most or think I can't replace easly. I do regret it a bit sometimes but who cares we all need to grow up one day right :) and honostly I wouldn't have time to do something with them anyway, even now that I cut off let's say 80% I still don't have time to play with the resting 20% so even those are kinda in the way and SHOULD be sold but I can't get rid of the last pieces as it would make me depressed I think :) so for now keeping them.. the worst thing is reading your post I got me thinking of buying some stuff off you, but that would bring me back to where I started lol :) so for now I am just sticking to my playstation dev's and 3do stuff collection. good luck with your decision and selling!

Consoles I tend to hold onto, but I have a habit of selling games I have already beaten that I do not want to replay (For example, I may list Metroid Prime 3 on the Marketplace now that I beat it 100% and sure I do not want to beat it again). Some games I regret selling, while some I have never looked back.

To be honest, my plan would be to keep all systems you can't emulate, and sell the others. My plan (once I get some cash and a place of my own) would be to have a huge collection of games\DVDs on bookcases, while not having many of the systems (everyone loves having a shitload of games on a shelf) and using a home theater PC as my main TV recording\DVD watching\game playing device. It's versatile, fast, wireless (buy a PS3 controller) and you don't have to worry about damaging your collection.

    So my ideal would be:
Under TV: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2\PS3, Xbox\Xbox, Gamecube\Wii, PC with MythTV for recording, playing and watching.
And some nice IKEA bookshelves for all my games, DVDs and CDs.

Games are easy to store, console's arn't.

Game Cube crap? Come on, it's not that bad. I'm playing quite a few really nice Game Cube games on my Wii these days such as Bio Hazard 4, Eternal Darkness, Sonic Gems, F-Zero GX, Ridge Racer, Auto Molesta (or what ever it's called) and a few others. There is an awful lot of shit on it mind you. Far more than most systems out there apart from the like of the Jaguar, CD-i, 3DO etc

I know 3do isn't the best game console out there and it has quite some crappy games, but comparing it to Jaguar and CDI is a little too harsh lol :crying:

Yakov Smirnoff was right.... possessions have a habit of owning YOU, if you know what I mean.

But don't sell everything; there'll always come the time when you'll regret it. My advice is to keep everything that's good and sell whatever is shit. Also sell anything that you're sure you'll only play once in the space of 5 years. Classic games and systems are worth the space they take up, and although it's a bit embarrassing to admit it, sometimes I find myself staring blankly at a system in admiration *** or even patting it gently, saying "Ahh, my trusty PC-Engine..." ***

I hope my post has been worth it in comedy value alone.

I don't see why everyone underestimates the little cube's games. I think they are awesome - more fun games on GC that on XBOX, for sure

I can't currently think of any system I have that I'd sell. Maybe some games though. Generally I don't like selling my older games. Newer games I have a much easer time with. I'm not particularly attached to newer games. Might have to be with the fact that they are so common anyway and tend to get outdated.

I don't play all my stuff regularly but usually I don't want to get rid of it. Alot of the time it's not worth it. I don't really play my GameCube and I could ditch that but for what? The system is like a 20$ system. I'd rather just sell the games I have that suck. I also have a Nintendo 64 which while I don't see the point in selling the system, I have a good bunch of games I'd like to unload. Esspecially if I could get ahold of a V64 or Z64, or something. Even though N64 still has the problem of the shitty analog sticks that don't last.

Cube kicks ass, even though I liked Xbox most last gen. The good games were definetly good.

I never sell anything unless I really don't want it. I've never traded stuff in or anything like that unless I have doubles of something.

I'm where Mott is. Every time I've sold a game console, I've regretted it. I have been the beneficiary of more than a few complete lot purchases, in which case I'll sell or give away duplicate items. But I'm also a hopeless packrat and exactly the kind of moron who will obsess over a particular game just because I don't have it in the house.

I don't have a particular objection to emulation, but I do feel pretty strongly that it doesn't fully replicate the experience of playing a game on the original console. So I would be cautious about relying on emulation to replace anything that you might sell.

Of course, practical concenrs might win out. If you need the cash, or if you honestly don't touch those systems any more, you should consider if you're able to let them go. If you're the altruistic type, you might also consider if there's someone out there who will get more use and more enjoyment out of your gear than you will. Hope you make a decision you're happy with.

I´ve bought a lot of consoles on flea markets and sold probably every one of them with a financial gain so I cannot really say that I completely regret every sale.
However, there was one single sale that I now highly regret, though at that time it was financially seen a smart move.
I bought a PAL version of Conkers Bad Fur Day for N64 at a local electronics store sale for 20 Euros. Played the heck out of it, then later on sold my N64 and all games for it. Conker, as it was complete with manual and only slightly damaged box due to the price sticker, fetched 80 Euros alone.
Thought I wouldn´t miss it due to the Xbox-version, but boy was I wrong. The load times alone were the horror.
There´s some other stuff I still want to dump though, my Master System II with 10 or so games, my FZ-10, and my 30-ish Mega Drive asian import games (not sure if they are bootlegs or for real as most are missing instructions).

As a general rule, I'd say never sell/give away a console unless you really need money, the reason being that consoles (more often than games) seem to become difficult to find and/or expensive soon after they're not offically supported. It can be a pain in the ass later on if you find that there's a game that you really want to play but you have to worry about whether or not it's worth buying the system for it.

I used to have a Genesis/32x and a bunch of games for it. I was coerced to give it to my cousin because at the time I had just got a PSX so the logic was instilled in me that I would no longer need the 32x now that I had new games. So I gave him he 32x and tons of games for it and he never f-ing played it! He gave it to some friend and it was lost somewhere along the way. Now I want it again, but it's hard to find them for a fair price. It was $20 brand new when I got it. I had some kick-ass games for it, too - Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Fighter, Knuckles Chaotix, some other fighters and flying games. Son of a bitch. Luckily I kept most of my Genesis games and my Nomad, though.

Eternal Darkness, for me, would be worth buying a Gamecube for alone.

My GC was the console that got the most hammer in the last gen. I usually only sell consoles when the newer version is backwards compatible (ie. got rid of the GC when I got a Wii, PS2/1 got rid of when I got a PS3, but I've kept the N64 and SNES etc)

If you're never going to play them again and don't miss them then why not sell them and buy yourself something you'll appreciate more? You could always start collecting again one day when your life is better suited to it.

I have sold collections before and I regretted it for a short time but then was glad I did it. I'd do it again too.

BH4, ED - Not my type of games
Sonic Gems - Apart from Sonic Fighters, there isn't much to really want if you have the games on other consoles, Sonic CD is better on the Japanese Mega CD, it's only benefit is the laziness factor if you can't be arsed to get a proper machine out and play the poorer version on the Wii / GC...
F-Zero GX - Got, but still prefer the SFC version
RR, AM - Are you having a laugh? Got the PS2 versions of these and rather play them on that. Can then play AM US Tuned too. I like AM as it's a great game when you take lower spec cars and have slipstreaming battles to get the lathargic cars to win.

The Gamecube was a system I struggled to find any game I *really* wanted to play. I have Soul Caliber as I have it on all three systems but never played it. My most played game on it is probably beach spikers... :banghead:
To be fair, there are far more games I want to play on the 3DO then I do on the Gamecube...

Well I will probably have a clear out and prune out my collection, other things I've remember are things like the Wonderswan, 3DO, MSX and a few other things.

My main problem is going to be trying to sell / trade things in the 2 weeks I am back in the UK.

Jamtex: Not a fan of Wind Waker or SM Sunshine?

At any rate, I've sold off tons of stuff and deeply regretted it. I'll never sell off anything ever again, even the truly stupid stuff, unless I'm in a life-or-death situation where I need to do it.

It is true that your posessions, particularly stuff like a game collection, end up owning you, in that you spend a lot of time organizing, cataloging, cleaning, etc..., but isn't that part of the fun of it? It is for me.
