Shameless product placement or great symbol?

Still an interesting read. In the new movie "Reign over me", which features a man (Played by Adam Sandler) who was devastated by 9/11, you see several scenes of him playing Shadow of the Colossus, and rather than simply mashing buttons like as portrayed in most video games, the game has, according to the director, some symbolic meaning behind it, about the giant monster falling symbolising the World trade centers, and many other things.

Still, it IS a little conspicuous that this is a Sony pictures film, and SOTC is strictly a Sony published game.

Don't get me wrong, I love Shadow of the Colossus, and I think it has an awesome soundtrack, story and that is somewhat of a work of art (as far as video games go), but I think this is a WEIRD symbol, don't you think?

To be honest, however, I wasn't really interested in the movie until I heard that they were implementing a Video game in it that actually serves a purpose other than filler material. Like a 10 second cameo of Super Mario bros. plays in the background, or someone is playing a *cartless* old Game Boy while beeping and buzzing sounds play. I have seen the Wizard, by the way, but that movie was basically a really reaaaallly long Mario 3 commercial, imo.

    EDIT:

Oh, and by the way, this is NOT a patriotic themed film, its about friendship. Just to clear things up.

After the "buy me a PSP" adblog fiasco, I would say that this is intentional.

Well, SOTC already DID have a viral marketing campaign around 2005.

BUT I do have a theory:

Perhaps they are going to be playing it on a PS3 and an HDTV. That way, there won't be any noticeable FPS drops during graphically intense parts. I noticed some slowdown when playing SOTC a few times, but nothing too terribly bad. And playing it on an HDTV will make it look as good as it could get, etc.

However, I do find it odd that they are advertising for a two year old game, don't you agree?

On an unrelated note, I think the team behind Ico and SOTC should make a PS3 remake of SOTC (maybe a special collector's edition with a little artbook and other swag) with those 20-ish Colossi that got cut from the final game. One of those cut Colossi requires you to jump on top of it from the BRIDGE. For those that don't know, that bridge is somewhere around 300-350 feet tall.

This, of course, is fanart, but the idea is still the same. Oh, and if anyone wants pics of actual cut Colossi, just ask. I'll rapidshare / Megaupload them or something.

I don't think so. I saw it the other day, and while he might have been playing it on an HDTV (it was a projector of some sort), I'm pretty sure it wasn't a PS3 because the controller he was using wasn't a Sixaxis. It looked like it was a Madcatz controller or something. I guess it might have been a third-party sixaxis, but if it was an advertisement for Sony why would that be the case?

Oh, and on the subject of product placement, I remember Casino Royale had at least a few blatant references to Blu-ray players and discs (there was a Sony player in the movie) throughout the movie.

Wouldn't mind seeing these. Why not start it's own thread in Rare Gaming?

I'd rather see "the next thing" from them. I think both of their games are fantastic, but there's too many remakes these days. I think maybe 10 3D games total from last gen moved me. These two were at the top.
