http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/shaq-fu-a-legend-reborn The rumors are true, Shaq Fu 2 is happening. Big Deez Productions has announced has announced Shaquille O’Neal is on board for this new reboot. And now they're asking people to help make it a reality, at a minimum of $450,000. (And before anybody brings up the whole argument of "why doesn't Shaq foot that bill?", a: he is throwing some money into the project, and b: the crowdfunding campaign is primarily designed to gauge interest in the project.) So, what are the ASSEMblergames' members' thoughts on this? I think this is one of the stupidest goddamn things I've seen recently for a handful of reasons (bullshit 90s nostalgia factor, the "lolsobaditsgoodirony~!" aspect, those two things pretty much being the only novelty of this game, absurd perks, flex-funding*, etc), but what absolutely kills me about this most is that they're already planning $170+ worth of DLC. Fuck this. But, considering how many people on the internet go gaga for "ironically" bad garbage and/or nonsense 90s nostalgia (hi reddit), this'll probably get funded. Also, in addition to the questionable Shaq model, the animations (at least those in the teaser) are pretty wonky. If you're gonna make a sequelboot to one of the most hated 90s games, at least replicate the one aspect that the original did successfully. *i.e. "we run off with your money if this campaign doesn't reach its goal"
It's not the end of gaming as we know it. They obliviously have a sense of humor and realize they are playing off of how bad the original was. I have to give some props to whoever thought to cash in on a game made infamous by online reviewers
I dunno, at the very least, it doesn't appear to take itself too seriously. I will definitely agree that the Shaq character model is ridiculous (of all the people, why give more muscles to Shaq?), and it seems like some of the baddies' arms are made of rubber. I kinda like the SFIV art style with it though, and maybe it'll be worth a Steam Sale pickup. One annoyance, the first stretch goal is "$500,000 - We add a challenge mode!" Really? You can't just include that in the base game? Finally... (skip to 2:15 because the board didn't want me to share it that way)
Halo meets Street Fighter meets Final Fantasy? I'm shocked someone has pledged $15k to play Basketball at his house lol.
I actually think this could go over well. My first issue was this being taken too seriously, and it doesn't appear like it is. Although that crowd-funding is a little off. Can't say I'm interested enough to help out.
Why so much heat?! It's just a game, they didn't put a gun on anyone's head and said fund it or you die. Plus, if it is a good one, no harm! I expect some heavy action side scroller like some Treasure games but with hiphop music
Please, don't hold your breath Why so much heat: It's a sequel to one of the worst received games ever It's a beat 'em up sequel to a fighting game It's by a company with no track record (I don't care what projects these guys worked on, don't expect a Treasure game) "Flexible funding" means you lose your money whether or not the game gets 100% funded The character models look pretty ridiculous The plus side: You don't have to fund it This team working on this wouldn't be working on anything else anyway Shaq seems like a cool dude in general I'll be waiting for the other upcoming crowdsourced game starring a 90s NBA superstar: The Magical Realms of TÃr na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa
Wh-why...? Shaq looks like an absolute monster in the trailer, and the shit-eating grin, ugh... *barfs* I hope it does end up being made, just so I can see all the ridiculous reviews and commentaries on YouTube.
If I may add to the "heat" list, I'm going to reiterate the absurd incentives and re-emphasize the little fact that THE DEVS ARE ALREADY PLANNING AT LEAST $170 OF DLC OUT THE GATE (how is this not a problem for people?), plus I also think a lot of the novelty with Shaq Fu 2 is lost when you realize that Shut Up and Jam Gaiden essentially vaguely did the same thing before (tongue-in-cheek, genre-shifting fan driven sequel of a horribly-received mid-90s game endorsed by an NBA player), albeit Shaq Fu 2 having the advantage of Shaq's direct involvement in the project (which is actually kinda neat). And if I had one other nice thing to say about Shaq Fu 2, it's that I find it cool that the WiiU is a stretch goal before PS4/Xbone. This touches on something else I'd like to discuss further down the line (but as a separate topic if I ever get around to it): I feel that an obsession with "ironic" mediocrity has started to blur the lines between that "ironic" mediocrity and genuine mediocrity.
I think this is pretty fuckin' funny, but it could be even funnier if the devs added more hilarious stuff, like maybe the enemies could make rage faces when you beat them up?? or maybe the final boss could be CHUCK NORRIS, that'd be pretty fucking epic win, lmao. At least I'm glad they turned on flexible funding so they get to keep all the cash in case their ironically ironic irony game project doesn't work out.
Well, at least it can't get any worse than the first one. It is amazing that people think something will sell because of irony. Surely no one will touch this unless it is actually good?
I'm sure it will sell more because of the name compared to if it was a new IP altogether. It's not going to sell well (just look at the funding it has so far), but the people who feel nostalgic for Shaq Fu have probably since graduated college and have disposable income. For example, I have a lot of friends who are excited for the RBI Baseball reboot who don't know (or even care) that Namco isn't making it. Since Namco isn't making it, I'm sure the RBI '14 will lack a lot of the nuance that made RBI Baseball a classic to begin with. They just hear the name RBI Baseball and assume it's going to be the same...
"it's going to have a streets of rage feel to it" im in. As long as they don't FU it up. I have a buddy that still has his snes copy from when we were teenagers.
Shaq is loaded, he could probably afford to fund the whole thing himself if he wanted to. I remember watching an episode of Custom My Ride/Street Customs where he walked into West Coast Customs to pick up a car he was having work done on, and he just picked out a few other cars as if they were groceries.
