During the GW (Goldenweek) i went for a small trip to Yokosuka, more precisely Dobita, the original setting of Yu Suzuki's masterpiece Shen Mue 1 for the Dreamcast.
Decided to post it in here, instead of the japan-forum, since it maybe could/would interest not just japan interested people, but also those who where interested in shen mue

    Here the pics:

Some nice pictures there ! Thanks for posting them. I do recognize some of the shops but Dobuita on Shenmue never looked as shitty as the real life place

Thats so cool, for me that would make the entire trip, more than finding some rare Saturn shooter sealed for ¥1000

Great shots. I can see some similarities to the game. Of course the game was based on Dobuita/Yokosuka in the 80s. Based on modernization, I am not surprised that a lot of areas don't look that close to the game.

@yakumo: if you mean shitty =/ dirty, i will agree^^ shenmue had some really muddy and frowsty places, but due to the limitation of textures they couldn't reach the real one.

@taucias: haha! hilarious.. but sorry, never played the oversea version.

@sayin: had the same thoughts. shen mue plays anno '85, that's 22 years ago. and regarded to the fact, that japan is changing its (sur-)face very fast, it had to look completely different to what you will see nowadays. anyway the atmosphere there is really close to it.

f.E. check out the 3-circle lamp i posted, which you could see all the time @ 7 o'clock PM, when the lights turned on. they look very old, so they probably already existed back in time:icon_bigg

and tom could make it from its meal on wheel hotdogstand to it's own snack bar. even he still had to shear it with his friend jack.

Pretty cool. I think shenmuedojo.com has had a nice "real Yokosuka" picture gallery for a while now.

    Did you find any sailors?

EDIT: Damn, Jamtex beat me to it.

Fantastic, the two shop in the first photos and the stairs just straight from the game [although the park near the stairs is a parking area :p] Well is a military base near there [lot of navy ships plus the submarine :p] ? In the game is just an "ordinary" port :katamari:

no, yokosuka is a very famous military harbour in japan, which also explain why a lot of american shops and people are around this location (as well in the game). also in the game you may see a warship to the very left side (near shugentatsu's warehouse).
