Here's something kinda funny and Shemue related ^_^ Way back before I got a Dreamcast one of my friends got one just to play Shenmue. I came round to his house on day and he was calling Master Chen on the telephone (I think Master Chen is the right name...I haven't played Shenmue much...kinda boring if you ask me ^_^) But anyway, we decided to try calling the number on a real telelphone....and it start to ring! It went onto an answer after the beep...but at the end he said "Nobody by the name Master Chen lives here, so don't call again if you are wishing to contact him" . I thought it was quite funny at the time....guess I'll just shut-up now ¬_¬

LOL brilliant, I wonder how many phonecalls they did recieved :)

  3. Bit of trivia for those of you who didn't know, but they guy that provided the voice for Ryu's father in the Japanese version of Shenmue was Sega's own Segata Sanshiro.

And that is really cool about the phone thing! :smt040

That's hillarious. Did they use 10-digit phone numbers in the US version? That's quite a laugh.

Not game related, but my friends phonne number was published as the same number as the Texas Department of something rather (the place that found you a job. I think it was called the "TDC".) These guys smoked pot all day, and were very lazy, so instead of calling and changing the number, they just put on the answering machine "If you're looking for Casey, Juan, or I leave a message. If you're looking for the TDC, get a new phonebook!" That damn phone rang like 20 times a day before 9AM.

Very true, why would you want to say goodbye to everyone b4 leaving hk island. There are 3 main big parts in HK, first the NEW territories that's touching china, very develped now. Second part is still on the mainland bordering new territories. ANd lastly is the HK island itself. Kowloon and HK isnland is parted only by a small tiny harbour that races are held there to swim across. By ferry it would only take 10 to 15 mins. It would not take 45 mins even if u swan across. The view from either across victoria harbour, the harbour between kowloon and HK island, is one of the most famous sight in the world. Superbly beautiful. You can even see the bank of china, seventh highest in the world. People goto work from mainland to island everyday, and if you are in tsim sha chui (the southernest tip of kowloon, right across the island. it's very convenient. The strange thing is that they made few districts, aberdeen and wan chai on HK island (of course there are about 25 districts on the island in real life. They didn't bother to make any seperate districts in kowloon ( in reality there's are as much districts in kowloon as on the island). And why the hell they thought that kowloon is a town on top of a mountain??? Even in the 14th century there's no town on a mountain. There's a peak on the island, a beautiful tourist attration ( you ride tram up there, also has the world's longest escalator; you can ride the esculator up the mountain).

ha, kowloon walled city, a perfectly accurate discription of the place in the game, also being perfectly ficticious and ridiculous.

  8. Wish that place hadn't been torn down, it would have been really interesting to visit at some point. Offtopic, anyone know of any good websites with pictures and such about the Walled City?

oh, i get it now, the kowloon walled city is actually the kowloon sing(city) chai, what we call in chinese. Never heard of the english name though. It's a very poor neighbourhood, i've never been there. I heard that there's many drug dealers inside and any bad stuff unimaginable in there. It's quite interesting shenmue chose this forgotton place, I actually appreciate the game now... It seems to be a accurate kwc. And the bus scene is pretty real, going through kowloon to get to kwc, although i'm not too sure about the mountain. But it all makes sense now, and i'm eager to get to cd3.

Playing the Japanese game but being a native English speaker in this respect is a nightmare. All of the places have English and "Asian" names. All the characters speak Japanese, but the characters they use are not very "Japanesey" if you know what I mean. Hard to remember them. Also, all the FAQs and BBS's reference the English names. In effect, you have to learn both, and they're quite different.

after realizing the kowloon in shenmue is the kowloon shing chai, I think shenmue did a dam good job on it. It is reflected in those crumbling buildings, building side signs, the poverty, and the crime. Luckily i'm chinese, and i learned a lot of japanese at school.

I just beat the honourable member of hong kong darts association at blue sky beer garden, I passed the second round with 333pts, and ended with 506, because i screwed up the last one. He ended up with only 476, he said g-good, bravo. I thought he's teaching me a lesson... Finally I defeated that hard snob.
