hmmm I would also recommend an oldy but goody. And that is Project X (PC and Amiga) X2 can be gotten on the PSX. But I would also recommend you Tyrian 2000 (hell I have the iso uploaded to megaupload) but there are loads of old DOS pc shooters that are not bad either, but if you have an Amiga, I would recommend you to get Agony, which is a smashing shooter too.
As far as Neo Geo shooters go, Blazing Star is fantastic; one of my favorite games. The intro sequence alone is just incredible and the last boss is a little, well, strange.... But yeah, awesome game, well worth playing. Pulstar is also very good. It's a Neo Geo powered R-Type 1.5, and graphically what the original game should have always been to begin with. Cool intro sequence too. Last Resort is the other well known Neo shooter and is also very worthy. Of the three, I prefer Blazing Star but all three are definate must-owns. The rest of the shooters on the system are all pretty good or quirky in their own way except for Ghost Pilots, which is complete crap. I really like Prehistoric Isle 2. Twinkle Star Sprites is a fabulous 2-player versus shooter and well worth getting. It's unfortunate that the price it goes for places it out of most people's reach. Viewpoint is pretty cool. It's also possible to get a Home/MVS cart of Ironclad now thanks to SNKP, Nintendo and some Wii hacking. As for other systems I also agree with Einhander, Harmful Park, DoDonPachi (PSone), Thunder Forces III & IV, Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier, Soldier Blade and Star Parodier. To be fair, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga are like Marmite: you'll either love them or hate them. Personally, I really didn't get on with RS and Ikaruga is more like a really, really fucking frustrating shooting puzzle hell.
Gradius DX is for the saturn and PSX right? I'll have to add that to the list And according to this Galaga came out for the TG-16 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaga Maybe it's vague and it means Galaga 90' or 88'? and I am aware that Galpus is for namco museum .
I had a go on this recently, it's really good fun. I don't think the DC/Saturn ports are particularly expensive, either.
It's a port of "Galaga '88", not the original Galaga game from the early 80's. The American version (TG16) was called Galaga '90 because some years went by until it got released in the US. Furthermore, I find it a bit confusing to list titles like Gaplus separately. The same Namco Museum disc also contained other games like Gaplus and Bosconian, listing all of them separately makes it difficult to look for them because the actual game has a custom compilation title.
Ikaruga and Radirgy have both been ported to the GC as well. Sin and Punishment is also a unique take on the subject (N64, Wii), reminiscent of Treasure's Gunstar Heroes.
S&P is a rail shooter though. And yeah, there are some doubles in the list. A couple have also been rereleased on compilations, especially the older software. But I don't think it's possible or would make sense to split those must-have lists into consoles.
I still like Hotdog Storm, don't know if it's on any other systems but in the arcade though. Also, Triggerheart Excellica is good too, on XBLA.
Some of my favourites 1942, 1943, 19XX Choplifter Sonic Wings 1,2,3 Strikers 1945, II, III, Plus R-Type, R-Type Delta Philosoma (Really!) Parodius series Raiden, Raiden DX, Raiden III Tiger Heli RayStorm Darius Gaiden, G-Darius Gradius series Carrier Air Wing Xevious / Xevious 3D/G+
Ah that is true. Maybe if I knew which one it came in. Here is an updated list Feel free to edit it and help me out with arcade pcb only games if you like. And redundancies due to other ports and/or collections and make it a more accurate(?) list
I can definitely vouch for Bari-Arm on the Sega CD. Axelay on the Super Famicom was really cool, too. I really liked Thunderforce V on the PSX, and IV on the MegaDrive.
