hey guys, So i'm trying to decide if I want to get the NEOGEO CD (gotta use them caps locks). I've never owned a NEOGEO before, I was planning on buying a MVS but this one popped up cheap from a friend.. anyway some questions: What are some good games, I'm assuming there will be some MVS ports, are they any good? (seeing as I wanted a MVS) It appears it's region free but does it play backups/whats the method of backups on the system? What video output mods are avaliable, RGB,VGA, Component ect.. Any common faults? I have a feeling the CD lid may be an issue as it just clips closed.. Homebrew? Any cool mods around for it? Will my wife kill me for buying it....... TIA
It's got a ton of MVS ports. I've found an RGB cable (http://www.retrogamingcables.com/snk-neo-geo-aes-cd-rgb-av-scart-cables-tv-lead.html), no idea if it's any good, as I neither have an RGB SCART TV nor a Neo Geo CD.
Your wife would kill you for buying an AES, she might be more convinced and even more impressed with an MVS. For me the MVS is the only system to get, consolized systems them selves can be expensive but once you have it your access to games is far greater thanks to good availability and reasonably cheap prices compared to the AES. By all means a CD could be fun if the price was right, I've never played one my self but I never saw the point in the system due to added loading times. You money might be better put other places.
Will your wife kill you? Umm.. if she gets violent over electronics. I suggest you run while you can. Neo Geo CD is a sexy looking system, marry that instead.
it's ok, I told her about it and her first reaction was cool, you should get it for your birthday She usually kicks my butt at AOE and Dungeon Keeper haha but yeah, what about backups? Oh and it doesn't come with a controller but has 2 games and leads.. I have a Xbox360 Hori Fight stick I can mod up, I took a quick sqizz at the pinout and looks fine. It doesnt require any extra processing in the controller so I can go pin for pin..
If it's cheap enough it's not a bad system. In my opinion what they usually go for is too much for what it is. I also have not heard of any kind of copy protection on the NeoGeo CD. The system region determines the game region for each game.
The order I did it was 2-slot MVS board, CDZ, AES. My MVS has the Metal Slug series and most of the relevant shmup games while my CDZ is used for everything else (mostly fighting games) that I could get from Japan for about $10. It is worth mentioning that the loading time is not as bad as people piss and moan about (as good or better than PS1) and you can bridge a connector on the CDZ motherboard to change the region and make the system menus in English (I do not know if you can do this with the previous 2 models). Finally my AES arrived much later primarily as a display piece because even "meh" games are unreasonably expensive. EDIT: Oh yea, the CD does not play backups of everything or at least without some of them being patched.
I have one - U.S. version. Yes, the Neo Geo CD is region free and it will play backups (ISO). Most of its LIBRARY is ported from MVS library; there are a few titles that were exclusive to the CD format - never released in cartridge form: CD ONLY TITLES. RGB - is standard; get yourself a SCART cable. Same cable is used by the Neo Geo AES system... finding one should not be too difficult. I've never had any issues with mine - its a top loader. As for gaming genre; it has a lot of fighting games, some shooters and sports titles. If you have any familiarity with Neo Geo games/library - you may find that title available on CD. Not all MVS games were ported. My favorite games: Aero Fighters, Alpha Mission II, Ironclad, Last Resort, Metal Slug 1/2, Nam - 1975, Pulstar, Ghost Pilots, Robo Army, The Last Blade, Football Frenzy. Homebrew - honestly, not sure what is out there. Years ago there was an effort to translate the Samurai Showdown RPG title to English ... not sure if it ever got done or not. If so, I would imagine its available as a downloadable ISO. Controllers - I have the original gamepads, these are really nice. You can also use the game stick from an AES system and HORI fighting sticks are also available. Game Pad. You mentioned modding a controller ... controller cable extensions are available, I guess you could use one to wire to your 360 stick. Here's the controller port PINOUT. Nice thing about having a collection; is that CDs do not take up a lot of space, as do MVS and AES carts... There's a selling point for the wife. If you can get one at a good price - go for it. Its a nice system.
