Should I even bother with the Wii U at this point?

The Wii U continues to tempt me. There are more games on it I'd play than there are on XBONE. BUUUUUUUT, the NX is looming in the distance and rumors suggest it's launch lineup will be mostly Wii U ports. How long will Mario Maker servers be up?

I'm sure I'll know my answer after E3, but I'm taking suggestions. I have a large mountain of spare change I'm putting through a coinstar. A secondary console, might just be the thing to cash that cash in on.

 

Are you ok with your investment (buying the Wii U) devaluing with at least 50% in the next year? And you want to play the Nintendo exclusives right now? Is the answer YES to both, then go to the store and hook yourself up

If you're patient then the wise thing would be to wait for the NX reveal and make your choices from there.

 

Get the WiiU for the ability to mod it and play Gamecube and Wii games with that HDMI out support.
That's my only reason to get one, and even then I still haven't bothered.

It's more unique than the rest of the systems but even then it's just hard to sell one to me.

 

So region free, and gamecube mods exist?

The Wii U pad itself is why I dragged on my ass on it. The thing is big and clunky if they went with something say the size of a Vita it would've been more ideal. Plus the standard controller and it's Analog placement is off putting.

Even then, the game are difficult to resist.

interesting, honestly I was considering getting a regular Wii and just using that. I'm currently without a working Component GameCube and the Wii is such an easy mod that seemed like a good solution.
Wii U I'd only use for Wii U games, but if there is a region free mod I'd kill for it. No way am I playing censored Xenoblade.

 

The Gamepad actually is surprisingly comfortable. I bought one because I knew I'd want to play those sweet Nintendo games, and, unless a game uses the touchpad, it's really easy on the hands.

The Wii softmod is super duper easy, and honestly, I know there's a difference between the Wii and GC component, but I'm not gonna spend another $150+ on GC component cables for that. I'm almost blind as it is.

Honestly - the Wii U doesn't have many titles. I barely played Mario Kart 8 after finishing it, same with Smash Bros. Nintendo keep rewrapping their games and it's what made me not touch it since.

Splatoon, Mario Maker, and Star Fox Guard are three of the most uniquely interesting games to come out this generation.

Then you have Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, etc.

 

You have to be on a low enough FW to run Wii U backups, but that doesn't interest me. You can hack the Virtual Wii to play Wii games and Gamecube etc. I use the original Wii with component lead for Gamecube games.

I haven't played mine for a while until today after picking up Donkey Kong (selects version) and enjoying it. I have some of the better games, Mario 3D, NSMB, Zelda WW, Zelda TWP, Mario Kart etc, and they are definitely worth playing. I managed to get the Wind Waker bundle with a few extra games cheap (around £179) a while back, but the prices went back up to virtually what you could buy an Xbox or PS4.

The game pad is comfortable, but the battery life is poor (you can buy a better battery), but I use the Wii U pro controller for most games.


TLDR: An underrated system that has some very good games, the controller has poor battery life, system is too expensive compared to newer consoles on the market.

Look OP are there any games on it that you want to play? If yes then buy it or if no then don't.

 

Mario Maker is what clinches it as long as Nintendo indefinitely supports it . Smash is another must own, Mario Kart, Splatoon is a MAYBE since once the servers are down there isn't much of a game. Japanese version of Xenoblade since it looks pretty import friendly gameplay wise. Mario 3d world (or land) Toad's adventure, Wonderful 101 if I can find a copy at a good price, Sonic Lost world, Star Fox Guard and Zero.
The games are there, The question is will the servers for them still be in a year or two?

 

I can't see Splatoon or Mario Maker going anywhere in a year or two. Unless they get updates/sequels early on in the NX's life, but even then I would imagine they would continue to support the originals considering how popular they are.

 

I think it's an amazing console.
If I didn't have one, I think I would wait for E3.
Maybe there is a price cut or they say NX will have backward compatibility.
Anyway, I think it's worth to buy a WiiU now. There are some great games for it.
You won't find a lot of games to play but the ones that are good, are very good.
Also, the Pro Controller is amazing. The battery is the best I have seen and it fits perfectly in my hands.

 

Exactly what I'm thinking.
At first we bought it for my step-son, but I'm playing more than him, thanks to Xenoblade! A lot of pretty cool game on this system. Mario maker is fun locally too, the online features are a plus.

 

My take on the gamepad:

The two sticks are in the same place, just mirrored across the gamepad. The buttons are the same way.
To use the stick on one side and the buttons on the other, you have to have one thumb pointed up and the other one pointed across.

With a controller like the one for the gamecube, both your thumbs are in the same position.
With the gamepad, your thumbs are in different positions. This was uncomfortable for me.
I ended up resting the gamepad on my lap so I could contort my hand into the required position to keep my thumbs aligned.

Wasn't a fan. Sold it shortly after buying it.

 

But that's the same as the Playstation controllers.

 

Which is why I don't own any sony systems.

 

It's a toy, not an investment. Buy it and have a lot of fun!!! \n_n/

For a while in the multiplayer games, though... Perhaps it's the society's fault... That thirst for "new" that we all know so well...
