    Hey all,
Recently I bought a refurbished Model 1 Sega CD off of Ebay. The seller had replaced the drive belt, caps, save battery, etc. However, he specifically said he had only greased the drive rail, and hadn't touched any of the gears. When I messaged him about it, asking whether I should grease the gears myself, he said that the system already runs incredibly quietly with the grease there is, and that it's so quiet that greasing it further right now is completely unnecessary. In fact, he went on to say that greasing the gears too much can actually cause them to slip and damage/misalign the drive. The guy seemed to know what he was talking about, however I want to get a second opinion here.
This is the first time I've heard anything about grease doing damage to the internals of a console, and I've just gotten done greasing my 2 Dreamcasts and Model 2 Sega CD with White Lithium Grease so they'd run quieter. Was I wrong to grease the Model 2 and Dreamcasts even though it made them run way quieter? Or does the seller not know what they're talking about? If there's any additional risk of gears stripping thanks to a lack of grease, or the drive being damaged because of grease, please let me know if you're knowledgeable about this subject. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn’t unless necessary, I certainly have never had to and I have fixed a lot of these.

Thanks. Do you think it was it safe for me to grease the Dreamcasts and Model 2 Sega CD? They ran way too loudly before, but now all 3 are way quieter.

Safe, necessary, and advisable are 3 different things. And Dreamcast being noisy is a topic in its own right
