Should I put up another FTP? I have the ability to put up an (erratic) FTP. It would be up at my discretion, I can't guarantee any specific schedule but I'd be willing to try it out for a short time period maybe the next month or so during the hours I am awake and able to monitor usage. Does anyone know of a disclaimer I could use of legal stature? Of course I don't want to be held responsible for content uploaded of poor taste. Safety: I'd aim to make the server as safe as possible, particularly for me. Users (yes private accounts) would have to submit a DNS for me to specifically allow, unless someone has another idea I can look into? Content: Development process content only, preferably software resembling it’s original medium, initial content will be some leftovers from p2p and the last FTP. Preferably content will be plentiful *manageable* small files. I don't have indispensable space and would only appreciate large submissions if they were "premiere" submissions to my FTP; in that case I'd be honored and wouldn't mind Discrete submissions would be HIGHLY appreciated. Speed: I have a 256 kilobit upstream give or take, no that's not very fast but for people with good intentions this shouldn't be an issue. Patience is a virtue Full access would be limited to: - Vocal recognizable board members eager to contribute - Board members with recognizable “development affiliation†eager to contribute Limited access (r/o, upload only) would be given to unrecognizable, silent or new board members. After a reasonable contribution full access will be arranged. (Sorry but this is for my safety.) Please post your constructive feedback. I’m very concerned about security and am very open to suggestions regarding my protection. I think everything I've said so far is pretty reasonable; if you don't agree to any of the conditions, really, this FTP isn't right for you. If you would like to PM me please do so! This is only a *proposal*, asking for an account via PM to a nonexistent server will only make me loose faith in humanity.
There isn't any disclaimer that stands up to legal stature I'm afraid, the onus is very much on the 'owner' of the FTP to ensure that all the content is 'acceptable'. ...Apart from that I think you have covered damn near all bases. The limited access with restrictions (look accounts), and the setting up of private accounts are the crucial factors, imo. ...Oh, and above all else, only ever allow those that you 'know' and trust to have any kind of access.
On a practical level, people *hate* erratic ftps. If it's not on more than 90% of the time, people (uploaders especially if you kick them mid-upload) will get irritated and not bother. Just one of those things, unfortunately. As far as DNS/ip allowing, I think you'll find it easier to make individual username/passes, rather than tell each person with a dynamic ip how to use no-ip or similar.
Hopefully people will already know how to do this stuff, this clearly isn't a FTP for everyone. I'd like to say the FTP will be up from at least 1:00PM-12:00AM Eastern (-5:00 GMT) but I can't promise. When it's up, it will be continually up with at most a restart or two depending on how much of my system's resources are taken, I don't think that's too bad. As far as DNS/usernames, I'm doing both so that people are locked to an account. I will allow partial matches so that dynamics can come aboard. Ideally, I'd give out accounts tied to a MAC, but I'm not sure I can do that.
I think it would be great to have finally a _working_ knowledge / utilities base to start from.....especially for those who are working on the "latest" systems like PSX, PS2, GBA, etcetc... As for the MAC Address lookup...i think it was going to be an anonymous ftp??? Wouldn't that strike against the user's "privacy"? And, much more important, how many persons do you think would actually "risk" theyr identities since they all are working with tremendous "hot shit"? IMOO the FTP would be great...but it should be a) UN/PW tied b) anonymous But it's possible that i just said something stupid, tho
i didn't understand something , what will be forbidden on your ftp? I'm still after one ftp from Assemblergames to upload my kit and download some official stuff but nobody answer me about the address of ftp and others infos...
Opposed to Fabrizo's server, mine would be strictly development related, no games, no other media. If you have any published (or even unpublished of quality) material be it drivers, software, firmware, documentation, legal source, put it up. Because I'd only have it up for a month or so, I'd hope for QUICK interchange of small files within the month because it seems some people need a place to share some files but not with the entire world. This server would not be anonymous; I thought I made that clear. If I just had a Assembler login/pass and let anyone access the server anonymously, it obviously would jeopardize my safety which in turn jeopardizes the members'. I'll need something (be it partial DNS) to confine everyone's account to, one network to an account is the only way I can see this happening. I have a *cable modem*, I want to accommodate at most 5 people at a time and don't want to be hammered by five dozen people in 3 forums because someone leaked access.
suggestion a suggestion: how about give anonymous rights to browse only, no dl/ul. so people asking for accs will know what is already there/not there.
I guess I'm not getting through. I live in the US, I won't do anonymous access, period. I don't want people who are not going to contribute to have any part of this. It's not about what is already up for you to leech, it should be what you can upload to encourage others to share what you're looking for. I want to help people get what they are *specifically* looking for and let people share what they're willing to, not help the masses get "rare" files to collect/sell/never use. A quick indicator of someone's intentions would be someone's systematic downloading of every file. I know that if a few people work together, quickly the best public archive to date could be formed, that's what I had in mind. I'm going to stop talking now, I've explained my idea enough.
I don't think what your teying to do is very realistic. If your going for a 'everyone who downloads should/must upload as well', you'll eventualy find that their will be a drought of people who are both looking for something uncommon and have similar materials that you don't already posses. None the less, I wish you the best of luck getting this thing going, as im sure if it is successful it will be a great asset for the members of these boards.
